Living in the Atlanta area?

The company that merged with mine offered me a position on Friday. Considering they were just going to lay me off without an option, this is exciting. However, the job requires me to relocate to Atlanta. Yikes!! We wouldn't be able to move unless we had some relocation assistance, and I have no idea what the company is going to be able to offer me. We're talking on Monday. However, I thought since I know there are a few ladies here who live in GA maybe you could shed some light on Atlanta suburbs, good places to live, etc? I would like to do some research tomorrow to see if this is something we even really want to consider. I've lived in the DC Metro area for 20 years, so moving would be huge lol. I am hoping to find a new job here, but offers to locate for a higher job position don't come around every day so I want to do my due diligence!Thanks

We all definitely live in different parts of Atlanta too! I live a bit west (just outside the major suburbs actually). It takes about 40-45 mins in traffic to get to downtown Atlanta. I like that we live out of the main traffic but can easily get to where I want to go. It would depend on which part of Atlanta your office would be in, honestly. I wouldn't want to live in this part if the office was on the other side of the city.

Funny- my uncle who lives in Jonesboro (sp?) is up right now and we were talking tonight about how much he loved it down there. I joked about him moving back to MD and he said "not a chance in he!!". He was relocated in 1980 for his job and never looked back.

I relocated to Georgia 6yrs for my teaching job. I am from NJ. I have to say I love it, it did take me a good year to get use to it being from the north, its much more laid back here, cheaper to live, and the people are much friendlier. I live in Henry County, McDonough to be exact. Depending on traffic I am about 40 mins from downtown Atlanta. Your Uncle sounds like me Lisa, people always ask my DH and I if we ever consider coming back to NJ and we always say the same thing lol. We love it here. Just make sure your job is totally secure with the move because right now the job market sucks in Georgia.

Taylor, the office is north of Midtown, sort of by Piedmont Park? I'm looking at Google Maps lol. DH actually has family in Atlanta so I supposed we could ask them too if things got serious.

It's encouraging to hear people like it! As far as job security, that's a valid point and I would definitely have to make sure of that. Although, considering I know I'm going to be laid off in 1-2 weeks anyway, almost anything seems more secure than what I have now. I think the most appealing aspect is that we're currently underwater in our house to the tune of 60k (or more since the market keeps getting worse), and if this opportunity could get us out of that mess, that would be huge.

You're pretty central, so there are lots of options for you. I live in Douglasville to the west, another nestie (I will let her remain nameless unless she wants to tell you) lives in Marietta to the north, and I've heard good things about Roswell and Smyrna. These suburbs are all outside the perimeter. There may be some good places inside the perimeter too, but I'm just not all that familiar with them.

If the office is in midtown I'd say focus on the northern and western suburbs because traffic will be much easier to that area coming south than going north. Most people tend to focus on those areas anyway.

I live in- between Lisa's uncle and Jill on the southside of town and I'm 20 minutes away from downtown.

The cost of living is lower and the amount of house you could get for the same $$ would be huge espicially with the market the way it is.

I am not from there (clearly) but have been many times. My office is right near there too - it's downtown or "midtown" as they call it. I gather your big consideration would be do you drive to work (traffic insane, though you're used to that) or do you try to live near a MARTA station.

Two big areas you'll hear are "inside" or "outside" the perimeter. It's like the Beltway to you. My B/SIL live outside the Perimeter - they used to live in a really nice Townhouse in Norcross and now in a house in Dunwoody. From what I understand, Atlanta can be very transient and, because of that, rentals are easy to find (if you want to go that route at first to get a lay of the land, etc). You'll definitely get more house for your money!

Thanks for the advice ladies! I am talking with the VP in Atlanta this morning. No idea if it will work out, but I think it is at least worth consideration. Crazy!

Still hoping to find a job here in DC, but you never know Wink .

Yay! I grew up in Douglasville, but I wouldn't live there now.

I think living in Midtown would be great! I think that area is "trendier" and more like city life. Ditto others that you would want to live in the west or north suburbs.

Your budget will definately dictate where you can live... housing prices can be dramatically different from one suburb to the next.

JMO, I would not live inside the perimeter (hwy 285). I just always felt safer outside the perimeter... I know, that could be way skewed.

I would say to move now before you have kids! Just do it! Atlanta is awesome!
