I want to chop off my lion's mane

image

That's what it looks like now, maybe a bit longer since I grew it for the wedding. I'm preparing to go for my ultimate career goal, and I'd like to look a little less young and well, kind of like less of a hippie. My hair is exceptionally thick and wavy. I will not wake up any earlier to 'do' my hair, so any styles that require me to straighten or in any other way style it are out. I literally but it in a bun at night, and then wake up and take it out. I need something that easy.

Help?

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

Re: I want to chop off my lion's mane

  • Maybe just a shorter version that is still long enough to wear up?

Would your hair look good short? What about bangs?

  • The grooming standards are awful particular about bangs. I also have a giant forehead (as you know), and I worry that precision bangs would draw attention to it.

  • Bangs would require a hot iron of some sort, unless you keep them pulled back in barettes, thus defeating the purpose of the bangs. I vote long layers so you can keep some length but still get even the shorter layers to stay in a bun.

  • I agree with Ojo about needing to do something with bangs. I prefer bangs because of my seventeenhead, but I also prefer to straighten my hair. It's been curly the last few days and thus, no bangs (but a snazzy headband so as to keep them from looking like I did in elementary school. You've seen the pics on FB. If not I will show them. not. cute.)

Would you be able to do something about my length? It works well for me both curly or straight. I have layers, but long ones and messy ones so as to avoid the dreaded christmas tree head. I can tell you the name of my (cheap) stylist if you want, she did a really good job. I could also tell you the name of my favorite (not cheap) stylist if you want. She is more awesome but more money. Both are down here though.

  • My hair looked exactly like yours until yesterday. I cut it in a bob just below my ears. It looks great and it's super easy.

    PIP! PIP!

M/L, I need cheap. I'm a stingy, stingy girl, and with J's hair cut expense, I can't handle being fancy, at least until my car loan is paid off. I mean, I can handle it, but I can't.

  • My hair is really super easy, I promise. The cheap lady cut it most recently (because I hate spending money on myself), she did a nice job and all. I had a photo that she cut perfectly to, so if Meltoine's PIP works for you, you could always bring it (or perhaps the expensive girl who also happens to be a friend of mine can recommend an inexpensive place up your way).

  • I have hair just like  yours, a little curlier. I chopped it off to my shoulders so it looks cute half pulled back, but still long enough to pull it into a ponytail or bun

    Excuse the crappy photobooth photo:

I flat-ironed it this morning, but it looked super cute last night after I showered and let it dry naturally, too.

  • For now, leave it long and have it layered.

If you are planning on going to OCS in the near future, I would avoid cutting it short enough that you can't pull it back in a bun.  You don't need to worry about hair in your face while scaling an obstacle or standing in formation.

  • Meltoine, I'm going to have to see it natural, because it's super cute!

Les, I just want not to look 12. Although, considering I'm 5 years older than 95% of my competition, maybe looking their age isn't so bad. :)

That's understandable.  I'm sure you'll look older with your hair pulled back in a bun if you do leave it long. :)

Shorter hair does help with making one look more "mature," though.  I just can't help but look back on the recruits in my platoon with short hair who got lots of extra attention.  The wind was not their friend. :P

LOL. Good call. I'll probably page you at a later date so I can get more hair tips. I've watched youtube videos, but they just scare me.

Haha sounds good.  I'd be happy to help.

Just so I don't make it sound like only short-haired girls were unfortunate, there was one poor girl who showed up to boot camp with gorgeous thick, silky black hair that went all the way down her back.  I envied her hair (mine is curly and frizzy).  Well, her hair was so slick that it didn't stay in a bun very well, especially during rigorous PT.  My drill instructors first made her chop it off until it reached her shoulder blades and when it fell out of a bun one more time, they had it cut to her chin.  I felt so bad for her.

I've done it. My super round face does not look good. If I had her angles, maybe!

This is me too! I have chopped it into a bob or aline a few times and it works either straight or curly.

I agree, lots of long layers would look amazing with your hair
