s/o baby names...pronunciation

No one says Raegan's name correctly...its always Ree-gan...ugh...we spelled it R-a-e-g-a-n to eliminate that...anyone else have this problem?

Re: s/o baby names...pronunciation

  • WTF? I totally say RAYgan when I see that spelling.

Landon is easy... our last name, on the other hand, is always butchered...

Stawiery. Take a guess on that one.

  • I say ray-gan with that spelling. Our last name is always butchered and it isn't  that difficult. I'm sure we'll get some mispronounciation of the next kid's name though
  • When I see Raegan I say "Ray"gan too.

People ask me all the time when I say "Jane" - how do you spell that.  I think people are so used to crazy butchered made-up names!  DH and I joke that I should say "oh, it's  G-j-apostrophe-a-n-e" or something like that, lol.

There was a whole thread this week on pronouncing my last name - ha!

  • I wouldn't even think to pronouce Raegan any other way.  Such a cute name.

  • I wouldn't think to pronounce her name any other way. Some people are clueless when it comes to pronunciations, though. I once had a student named Casie, pronounced "Cassie." Poor kid is going to be "Casey" her whole life because her parents didn't know that to make the short a sound, the name needs the double s.

  • I see it like the president.  Huh.

I hate it when parents don't know what they are naming their kid.  I had a coworker who named her son Elijah.  She pronounced it Eli-Jah (hard j).  Drove me batty.  My grandma had a friend named Penelope.  Pronounced Pen-Elope-Ee.  Her mom had seen it in a book.

  • I totally say Ray-gan when I see her name as well.

People are ALWAYS mishearing us when we say Taryn's name. They always think it's Karen, and we have to explain that no...it's like Karen, but with a **T**.

  • I don't get the ree-gan thing... especially with the a coming before the e. To me, ree-gan would be spelled Regan, and I would still pronounce that as Reagan/ Raegan upon first sight.  That must be really annoying for you.

I don't like it when people spell names one way, and then insist they are pronounced another, against rules of phonetics.  For instance, I had a student named Mysheiea and she insisted her name was pronounced "My-EE-shuh."  Except based on spelling and phonics, no, it's not.  Drove me batty.

    Married in 2008 - DD born in 2010 - EDD 6.15.2012!
  • When people ask Cullen's name they always think we say Collin and then I have to explain, no it's CULlen, not COLlin.

Ditto! I once had a student named Geradana. She pronounced it "Jer-rod-in-a" and got really pissed if you pronounced it wrong...even on the first day of school.

  • Nobody can ever pronounce Kellen's name correctly either, which I don't understand. They even pronounce it incorrectly sometimes after I tell them what his name is. His name is pronounced exactly how it's spelled. We get Cullen and Kaylen alot. Poor kid.
  • That's crazy! I can't imagine where they are getting ree from...

While in recovery, we realized while we agreed on Collin as a name, we had never discussed the spelling. I wanted one L, DH wanted 2. You can see who won. His fear was people would call him the punctuation mark like Colin Powell. I thought it would be fine but I had also spent the last 40 some hours in labor and not eating and had just had major surgery so it wasn't worth the fight.

  • I have at least 1 student a year named Tiara, pronounced TEE-AIR-UH. Um no, that's TEE-AR-UH (like the thing that goes on your head).

I have a Queensha this year... pronounced QUEEN-EE-SHA. I'm sorry, where's the E that should be after the N?
