We're buying a new house, and I was just wondering how we're supposed to coordinate everything. We have to close on the house we're selling on the same day as the one we're buying because we need the money for the down payment, so how do we do that? I mean we can't really have anything left in the house when we close, but we can't have everything moved yet, either. Does that make sense? So what do we do with all our stuff in the mean time? Also, we should schedule the utilities to get switched on the day of closing, right? I am just so clueless!
Re: Coordinating a Move
A couple of options:
-If you hire a moving company, have them come the day before and keep the items on their truck overnight
-If you are doing your own moving, rent the largest truck you can and load up the night before and keep the items on the truck overnight.
-You can always pay for a storage unit, but that seems like more work to me.
-You can ask your buyers to "rent" the home to you for a few days (if they are willing).
If you do option a, b or c, have EVERYTHING packed except the clothes you plan to wear and a couple of sleeping bags. It isn't luxury, but it will work.
As far as utilities, yes, you need to schedule to have utilities turned on in your new house on the day of closing.

The closing companies wire the funds from the sale to the purchase. You don't have to do anything except give them each other's names.
Have everything packed up the night before, sleep on an air mattress or at a hotel, then move in the next day. If you're using movers, they'll hold it for a night; if you're UHauling, park the truck somewhere.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
Those are great ideas. Our seller was moving her things into storage because her new home wasn't ready in time for our closing date. We were willing to let her come back to get the curio cabinet and I think she has decided to leave an older big screen tv for us to keep. That's great since we are just starting out and have a lot of space to work with.
