Tips?

In march I started a new job and have been making a good income helping with bills and trying to pay things off. We bought myself a car to get back and forth to work so that added another bill to the mix. We are doing good now even paying extra on bills to get rid of them.. Basically its up in the air as to once I have this baby if I will continue working even if its only on the weekends. What tips, tricks, or advice do you guys have to save money and make it by with only one income?

Re: Tips?

  • You should XP this on Money Matters. Those ladies are great with this kind of thing.

  • I would not go down to one income, but if I did, I would work as much as possible in the next 8 months to pay down every single debt in interest order. I would not spend frivolously.
I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.
  • If you don't already have an associates or some kind of trade/skill, I'd bust butt to make that happen in the next nine months. It's way too easy to fall into the trap of saying daycare costs more than you make, then to subsequently give up on any career goals you had.

  • We are raising 4 kids on one income, though I've just started cleaning a few houses a month to help off set the cost of private school.  I use coupons and savings clubs as much as possible.  We eat most of our meals at home.  My husband takes left overs to work for lunch.  He drinks a ton of coffee at work, so I bought him a coffee pot to put in his office.  He also brings a reusable water bottle with him to work instead of buying water or sodas.

I only buy clothes when they are marked down on sale.  We get military discounts when ever we can.  Instead of paying for activities, we find free activities in town.  there are all sorts of festivals, street fairs and such all the time where we live.

There are some great savings blogs out there.  I follow Money Saving Mom, Thrifty Army Wife and The Crazy Coupon Lady.

My best advice is to just take a look at where your money is going and see where your family can cut things out to save.

  •  We have been living off of one income for almost 3 years.  The best advice I can offer right now, is to put away as much money as possible, and pay down as many bills as you can.  Living on one income is doable but you do have to give up a lot of extras.  We eat all of our meals at home, R takes his breakfast and lunch to work and we don't go out much.

  • Have you heard about Dave Ramsey? My sister and her husband started following his advice and then introduced my husband and me to him---I read his book (INCREDIBLY easy to read- and not at all a "money" book) in three days (and I work full time) and it has changed the way we spend our money. It's worth looking in to.
