Resigning during probationary period.

Any tips?

I've been in my new position 6 weeks. It's not a good fit.  I got another offer over the weekend for what was my first choice position when I was looking and I'm going to accept.

I'm within my 90 day probationary period at work. I am giving two weeks, willing to work more if they need it, but also completely prepared that they may just send me on my way tomorrow.

So, have you done this before? Any tips? I don't know what to expect, but I'm nervous!

Re: Resigning during probationary period.

  • I would not worry about this too much.  You don't even need to tell them you have another job lined up (because then they may think that you took a job with them as a stalling maneuver until you had a better offer).  I'd just say that it's not a good fit and you think it best to part ways before either of you invest more time trying to make it work.

They may actually be more ok with it since it's been so soon - they could potentially reach out to candidates they interviewed along with you, and have a greater chance that those people are still available.

Good luck with your next opportunity!

  • You have to do what is best for you.  I left my job of 6 months for a better offer and if that offer came along in my first 90 days you better believe I would have taken it because I am a lot happier and feel like I can contribute more.  Nobody can fault you for going after what you need to do to reach your career goals.  Just be prepared in the event they make your resignation immediate.

I called my boss and chatted with her before I sent her my resignation letter.  During our chat I told her that it wasnt anything personal and thanked her for the opportunity.  She let me finish out a 30 day notice.
