LinkedIn introductions

Is it strange to go through people to get to a 3rd tier connection?  I'm on the job hunt in a different state than I live in and I have a couple of 3rd tiers connections at a company I want to apply to.  Is it worth it, or should I just apply the old fashioned way?  I'm still pretty new to the LinkedIn world and don't want to put any of my "connections" in an awkward position.  TIA!

Re: LinkedIn introductions

  • Not strange. It's how the world works.

  • Definitely still apply the old fashioned way first, and THEN reach out to LinkedIn contacts. You shouldn't use LinkedIn contacts as a way to apply for a job, but you should use them to say "My colleage X applied for a position within your company, would you be willing to talk with her and potentially put in a good work with the hiring department/manager?" That way, they're just backing up your process, not being highly involved in it.
