Moms and moms-to-be: Medicines?

Hi all,

Does anyone have a recommendation for a website / book / anything with a list of medicines that are okay to take while pregnant? I'm driving myself crazy checking everything on every website I can think of but I would really like something simpler. Basically, I'm trying to put together an emergency pack of meds to take to India - in case I get a cold or bad allergies or whatever, I just want to have something safe with me so I'm not wandering around India looking for a drugstore while googling frantically.

I have an appointment with a midwife (my first) before I go but I thought it would be easier to bring a list of what I'd like to bring with me and have her check it out. It's just all a bit overwhelming!!

Thanks!

  • I got a HORRIBLE cold when I was 9 weeks pregnant and the doctor said the only thing I could take was 1mg of paracetemol every 8 hours.  Yeah, it sucked.  It helped bring the fever down but didn't do much for the aches and pains.  Bleh, not a fun week.

  • My doctor gave me a list (which I stupidly left in the US). I bet your midwife can give you one before your appointment if you stop by her office.

  • I'd check with your doc/midwife. I'm sure they will give you a list (or have you write one out) of medication that's safe to take. Mine said nothing but steam, hot tea and cough lozenges when I was sick. It sucked.

ETA: Also check safefetus.com . It has an extensive list of drugs you can take while pregnant.

  • My MW (and many in the NHS I believe) recommend nothing except paracetemol (and then only if absolutely nec), particularly in the first tri, but even after.

I had an ear infection this time and horrible colds thorughout my first tri with both kids. It sucks. Just think you will get through it.

But check your cough lozenges - some have medication in it htat's not safe. Ask your pharmacist if you aren't sure.

  • Tylenol, Benadryl, Claritin, and Tussin are all ok'd by my doctors. And with the recent cold-from-hell I got last month, I was prescribed all of them.

And saline rinses. Those are definitely your friend.

Thanks Welsh, I forgot to add to check the label and with your doctor. I used the Soothers - MW okayed those. Not really cough lozenges, just okay for sore throats.

  • Your doc/midwife should give you a list of acceptable meds (mine did). If not, ask for one. Personally I do a lot of Tylenol, tums, and occasionally robitussin (all only as needed of course).

kellymom lists them by risk category (the categories are explained) for both pregnancy and breastfeedling. I used this list a lot and both my doctors looked it over for me.

I took tylenol/paracetemol, Tums, and sleep-aid while pregnant.

  • I used safe fetus, too. Sometimes Kellymom, too. I also just used common sense to some degree, or I guess my own comfort level. My doctor/midwife ok'd some things that were level C and level D but I wasn't comfortable taking anything that but B. There are lots of women the world over who stay on Rx meds for depression/anxiety/sickness that are cat. C and D and their babies are just fine, so its really down to need and your own comfort level I think. Of course check with your doctor on anything you're really unsure of, though.
