Re: never forget...
I was about 3 weeks into my semester abroad in England. It was about 3:15 pm. I had just finished class for the day and walked through the tv room. The room was full of people, which was usual, but everyone was silently glued to the tv. The towers had been hit and I saw them fall.
That night was so chaotic for us b/c no one knew if we were going to be sent home or stuck in England indefinitely. Some of my classmates (all American b/c I was attending an American school) had very close connections to the attacks. One girl was from NYC and went to school in DC. Her cousin and dad both worked in the Towers but were okay. Another girl wasn't so lucky. Her best friend's dad was on flight 93.
We were put on super high alert, but we were well taken care of by the small town we were living in. The weekend after the attacks we traveled to Scotland. It was comforting to see American flags everywhere and to have total strangers come up to us and offer their support.
I've been watching msnbc all night, and they are replaying their coverage from that morning and interviewing the reporters working that day. It's interesting to see the coverage from New York for the first time.
I was at work and I remember watching it on TV. It was horrible and I couldn't understand why anyone would want to do that. I know there is evil in the world but I just couldn't imagine how someone could be that evil.
It killed me to see all those people running away and even some jumping out the windows. I can't imagine what was going through their heads as this was all taking place.
My brother lives in NYC and I am really hoping that these threats they are having are not real.
I think the bright spot of that day, if there is one, was just seeing strangers come together and help each other. Sometimes we don't stop to help people but when they were showing people trying to get away from the scene they showed how people were helping each other and encourgaging them when they didn't think they could go any further (I can't imagine the smells, dust, etc and how it would have made it difficult). I think people showed the true american spirit that day and I think to this day that american spirit is still going strong.
Our lives were scary enough as it was. We were waiting to find out results for DH (then BF) if he had cancer. A week later to the day, we got the results that he did have cancer
BUT, he's almost 10 years cancer free!!!!!
I woke up that am to my Dad yelling for me to wake up. I remember having to go into work, the roads and buisnesses were like a ghost town.
I was a senior in high school and my first period class was study hall and all the seniors skipped that class everyday. I remember walking from the parking lot to the entrance of the school and some kids were talking about it. I immediately thought it was a accident. When I made it to my class the t.v. was on and the second plane had just hit. I remember chills going through my body cause I knew we were under attack. The whole day in our classes we had the t.v. on and watched everything unfold.
