Re: S/O If you moved...(Poll)
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We go back and forth. We really, really like this area but I could see us moving further south eventually. So, we have no plans to move but we also don't have plans not to move.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? I think we would go to North Carolina or possibly South Carolina.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? I think my job skills are pretty transferable but DH would only be able to work in certain cities.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? My mom is local but has family in NC. DH's family is in Minnesota and there is no way I could deal with that cold! My dad is between South Dakota and Vermont and we are not going there either.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ?
I think there are great advantages to having kids in this area- so much culture and free stuff but I also think that their could be negatives that go along with like learning to drive, huge schools, super competitive, etc...
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area?
One thing I would miss would be the museums.
I have two things I would not miss: housing price and traffic!
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move?
Um, I think we'll move away at some point.
2. If you were to move, where would you go?
Either back to the Midwest where our families live or back to Dallas where H grew up.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city?
Depends on what city. It would be easy for me to find a job in MO because I'm already barred there, but if I had to go somewhere else I'd have to take a bar exam or corporate counsel my way in.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move?
Yep, we'd be closer to family if we moved anywhere other than SoCal or Maine.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids?
n/a. I mostly think this is an incredibly expensive place to have kids.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area?
What I would miss: The cultural diversity and availability of events, places to learn, things to experience you may not other wise have done.
What I would not miss: The traffic. The COL.
Stand up for something you believe in.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? I would stay here forever, but DH is getting the moving itch. He has lived here for all but about 7 years of his life (in HS/college), so I think he wants to try something else.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? I would want to move closer to my family (in OH), so probably Chicago. But that's not going to happen (too cold for DH).
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Not in my field. I work in a very narrow area of law and most of the jobs are in DC. DH's best job prospects would be in cities he doesn't want to live in (NYC and SF are so expensive it would take a huge raise to maintain our quality of life, Chicago is too cold).
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Not if DH has anything to do with it. He wants to be somewhere warmer, which would put us a lot farther south or west than our families.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ? I think there are pros and cons to it. It's certainly less boring than where I grew up.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? I most definitely wouldn't miss the traffic. I'd miss my friends and FIL most - it's taken me a long time to build up a network of friends and family here.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We moved here knowing we'll likely be here until retirement. After that we'll probably move. However, since I haven't been able to get a FT job, we haven't ruled out moving sooner.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? Upstate NY, most likely - so peaceful.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Probably
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Yes
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ? I think it's good. Lots of culture and opportunities. (ETA - don't have kids, so what the hell do I know?)
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? One thing I would miss is the variety - where to shop, eat, go, etc. Not miss - traffic (a close second would be the power outages)
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? I definitely like it here, but I don't know there is any place I want to live in forever. We don't have any immediate plans to move, but also no plans not to move in the future.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? Most likely we'd move back to Columbus, Ohio.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? I work in government, so as long as we moved to a state capital, I think I would do fine finding a job.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? We'd be closer to my ILs and further away from my family.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids? N/A...no kids here.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? Miss: lots of stuff to do, public transportation (even though I know we all complain about Metro, it is nice not to have to drive to work); Would not miss: COL
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move?
I can see staying here forever. Never say never, but we have no plans to move. I've been in the DC area for the past 16 years.
2. If you were to move, where would you go?
If we moved, it would probably be because one of us got a great job offer somewhere else. One possibility is NJ -- DH's family is there and we would both have job options there.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city?
It would be difficult to find a job doing exactly what I'm doing now, but I could find something in a different specialty.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move?
I don't think we'd move just to be closer to family, but we would take that under consideration.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ?
I think it's great. I lived in the DC area when I was in elementary school and I loved it so much that I moved back years later. The only real negative is the cost.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area?
Would miss - Diversity
Wouldn't miss - Traffic
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We're planning on staying for the forseeable future. We've been saving for a house for a while and we're looking to buy around August 2013 when our two-year lease is up
2. If you were to move, where would you go? We've flirted with the idea of moving to FL because that is where we have a lot of family, my parents, BIL/SIL, FIL and his family
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Hmmm...I'm a fed program analyst. So I think I could find another job some place else but I'm not really sure.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? That would be the only reason we would move probably.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ? I think it is a great area to raise kids. I love the diversity and tons of free activities. However, it is not a cheap area to raise kids (despite the free activities)!
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? I would miss the diversity of the area.
I wouldn't miss the HCOL especially the expensive housing.

1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? I grew up around here and I wouldn't mind staying forever (or at least until we retire), but DH does talk about moving from time to time.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? Practically speaking, it would make the most sense for us to move to upstate NY (Syracuse). I have a LOT of family there and the COL is so much cheaper. But I think we would prefer to move to Maine or the Napa area (not practical at all!). Those two are our options for retirement, though.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Probably, although I'm not so in love with my line of work right now that I'd want to stick with it. DH definitely could--he's an attorney and I think he'd have an easy time (even if it wasn't a lawyer job).
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Like I said, if we moved to NY, yes. Maine, we would be closer to some family and closer to where we all vacation. CA, no--we'd be more than 2000 miles from any family.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids? I do. I love that we have all the seasons, that we're close to so much free stuff (museums, and Rock Creek/Sligo Creek parks are right by us). The schools are also great.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? Would miss: having my parents close by as we continue to expand our family; close friends. Not miss: the high COL (particularly real estate in this area, oy).TTC #2: BFP 12/17/11, m/c 1/7/12 and D&C 1/12/12
baby blog/cooking blog

1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We'd like to stay here forever, as long as we can afford to buy a house someday.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? Probably back to the Pittsburgh area. Not ideal, but I can't think of anywhere else I'd want to move to because it'd be too far from the little bit of family we have.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Depends on the city of course... Pittsburgh, probably not.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Yes
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ? No kids, but I think it would be a wonderful place to raise kids (minus what I hear about daycare costs/situations).
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? Miss: public transit. Not miss: HCOL
Planning Bio
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? definitely not staying here forever, we just signed our lease for a year. if i find a job elsewhere, then sooner.
2. If you were to move, where would you go?
back to nyc is definitely on the table because our urban family is there. we're also thinking about chicago for something different and a lower COL. toying with other cities too. if we both had really good job opportunities, we might consider boston or providence. in a perfect world, we'd be able to move to london or edinburgh but alas work visas for two yanks would be tough to come by.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city?
well, given that it has been infinitely harder than i'd expected to find a job here, i'd now expect it to be as/more difficult almost everywhere else. DH's skill set is always necessary (data/IT) so he most likely have his pick of jobs.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move?
new york would be closer to my family, boston or providence might be too close. i like a little distance. chicago would be further from all of our friends and family, so a big drawback for sure.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids? NA
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area?
i would really miss living so close to my best friend and seeing her daughter (my niece) regularly.
i won't miss the summers - way too hot, too humid, and too long for my liking.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? I feel like we live in our forever home, but wouldn't rule out moving if the opportuinity came along. DH on the other hand is a local.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? I'd think the Southeast, particularly my beloved Lowcountry SC.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? I'd have to move to a different area of my field.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Closer to grandparents.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids ? Pretty awesome. The schools for the most part are excellent, lots of green spaces, and access to amazing resources like the Smithsonian.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area?
Miss: diversity, cultural resources
Not miss: Having my kid eventually learn to drive on the Beltway (shudder)
1. Realistically, we'll stay in this area forever. We both really like it & it's a good place for our careers.
2. Our unrealistic future would be packing up & moving to the Cotswolds in England. I could probably get a job there easier than my husband and I'm pretty sure we'd love living there. However, the exchange rate (our savings would be cut dramatically) and being so far from family are major, major downfalls even if we both could get jobs.
3. Depends on the city. I'm still in school, but once i finish I'll be trained to be a landscape designer anywhere in the mid-Atlantic region. Moving to, say, FL or Montana would mean I would have to learn all new plants. My husband's job might be a bit more difficult, but not impossible.
4. No.
5. I think this area is a great place to raise kids. Good schools, lots of fun things to do (even in the teen years), etc.
6. I would miss all the free things to do. I would probably not miss the random back-ups on 66 at 2pm on a Sunday.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We'll probably stay here until Otto retires (which we hope he can do in 10 years), unless he got another good job opportunity in the meantime.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? We're currently thinking beach towns to the south, but if he had the chance to move to Europe for work, we'd take it in a heratbeat, kids or no kids!
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Right now Otto's would likely be near some sort of military base, but in 10 years the orad is wide open. I'll be able to work from anywhere as long as there's a good phone line.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? We'd be farther away from both his and mine, but if we stayed here in NC or SC we'd still be decently close enough to visit.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids? We don't have kids but are trying. I think this is a fantastic area to raise kids, but we would make the best of any other place, as well. Hopefully I'll get to have them here - great options for birth centers (midwives) with hospital backup if needed.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? Would miss all the great events - Screen on the Green, Shirlington's Octoberfest, wine festivals, Herndon's Friday Night Live, MD Renn Fest - so many others, some free, some not. We always have so many choices for fun here. I would not miss the traffic and the high housing costs.
WOULD MISS THE 'ACTION' OF DC... HOPE THAT MAKES SENSE. JUST THE ALWAYS HAVING THINGS GOING ON.
1) I don't like the idea of staying in this area forever because it sounds boring as hell. But I like it here, so if I had to stay some place forever, this isn't so bad.
2) I'd LOVE to live in CA--San Diego, LA or SF. I'd be happy in any of those cities. or I wouldn't mind going back to the Raleigh area in NC.
3) considering the fact that I can't find a job here, I doubt I'd have an easy time anywhere else. but I think that is more a factor of the economy right now than my profession.
4) no...this is not a bad thing all the way around.
5) yes, I think this is a great area for kids. tons to do and great schools.
6) if we moved to NC, I would not miss the HCOL here, but I would really miss being so close to a big, vibrant city. if we moved to one of the cities I listed for CA, the COL would probably be even higher and those cities are way cooler than DC :-) so I guess it would be a wash.
1. I'd move
2. Maybe back to Ohio
3. Nope that's why we left Ohio
4. No my family mostly live here
5. I wouldnt put kids in the school where I work
6. I would miss the family beach houses
Wouldn't miss how many people live here and the prices at all.
1. Do you want to stay in this area forever or do you have plans to move? We will probably move eventually.
2. If you were to move, where would you go? In the short term, somewhere where DH will go to grad school--possibly Notre Dame or Philly. Long-term, probably Fauquier or Frederick County. We like Virginia, but we want to move a little farther from the city.
3. Would it be easy for you to find a job in another city? Right now, no, because I've been working in non-profits. After I get my MLS, it will probably be easier.
4. Would you be closer to family if you did move? Not really, no.
5. If you have kids, do you think this area is a good or bad place to raise kids? No kids yet, but I think it's a decent place to raise them.
6. List the one thing you would and would not miss about this area? Would miss: being close to lots of stuff to do, our church. Would not miss: the traffic, HCOL
