PW: Anyone have Zoysia grass?

We tore up the yard this weekend and will be laying sod this coming weekend. We're calling and ordering the sod today and are leaning toward Zoysia instead of St. Augustine. I've done a good bit of research but I'm just wondering if anyone else has it and if so, do you like it? Any pros, cons, etc.

  • We have St.Augustine, but wanted to add check your HOA covenants. Our neighbor laid Zoysia in June and had to move, then replace with St.Augustine 3 weeks later.

Thanks for the heads up. Zoysia was recently approved and added to our by-laws. The neighborhood as a whole has really struggled with St. Augustine grass so there was a big battle to get other types approved.

  • We just had the lawn half re-sodded with St Augustine, and the guy that did it has his own sod farm. He said he completely redid his entire lawn with Zoysia because it doesn't have the level of natural pests that St Aug does and is more drought tolerant. My feeling is, in a few years we'll probably end up redoing our lawn in that. Despite being able to water once a day with the new sod, our grass still looks like it's dying by the end of the day. So frustrating and expensive.

  • We didn't have it when we were living down there, but we have Zoysia grass here at our house in MD, and it's wonderful. It is very drought resistant and full all spring, summer and fall.

Our neighborhood is now fighting with the HOA to approve Zoysia. If they approve it, I would definitely put down Zoysia over St.Augustine. We struggle with our grass and we pay a company to spray it monthly. Most months they end up making a visit twice due to weeds and/or bugs.

  • Thanks guys. You basically reconfirmed what we've hearing. I just figured I'd ask in case anyone had a bad experience. I'll be sure to update and let you know what we think of it in a few months.

  • omg I love zoyzia. It is so soft and fabulous. My parents have it in NJ, and the only negative that I know of is that it turns severely yellow when it gets cold/dormant, but I don't even know how long that would be an issue here.
