fire update
At the last count, the big fire was 50% contained. The fire on the other side of town was 90% contained, and the people were allowed to return home to that neighborhood over the weekend. They had 800 firefighters working the two fires.
My aunt and uncle's street was hardly singed! They and their neighbors will be getting back into their houses tomorrow. They have cleaning up to do (and their refrigerators will be disgusting), but they are so thankful to have their houses in tact.
My grandparents' neighborhood should be open on Thursday. The vast majority of their neighborhood is flattened, but their next door neighbors to the south, only their back yard and shed burned, not the house, and their hedges are somehow still green.
They have been overwhelmed with donations. Donation/distribution centers are actually asking people to please not donate any more clothes or bottled water, though they do need *new* undies donated. So many people are trying to send things to my family and want to help right now, but they really won't know exactly what they need for a few weeks.

When my mom was volunteering in the distribution center last week, sorting through donations, she found old undies with worn out elastics. Sick.
My grandparents' BFFs lost their home in the fire in 2008. After that, my grandma packed up some valuables/keepsakes and kept them under the bed so that if they ever had to evacuate they could take those with them. They had a "trial run" when they were evacuated for a fire earlier this year, so they were able to really think about what they wanted to take with them. So they do have that. Also, after the 2008 fire, their friends helped them make a video inventory of their house, which they kept off-site, so that is helping them get their lists together for insurance. They have been very impressed with their insurance adjuster so far.
