This morning DH discovered a bicycle in our front side yard, and the gate to the backyard on that side of the house wide open. Neither of us heard anything, but this happened at some point between when he took the trash out at 11pm and getting up at 6. He thinks someone was being chased and dumped the bike and cut through our backyard. It's still there, so obviously whomever it belonged to isn't able to come back to get it (or tell someone to come get it) or it was stolen in the first place.
What would you do? Is it dumb to call the police and ask if they were chasing someone in the vicinity of my house last night? Or see if someone has reported a missing bike? (Though that is going to require me to go outside and inspect it to give a description)
Re: A weird WWYD
We had a situation in my neighborhood this weekend where a teenager who was bleeding came up and stole a bike from some littler kids to get away.
I would post on your listserv and maybe also call the police.
This. And maybe call the cops. How weird.
I will say - the last time our gates were opened (it started happening on a pretty regular basis when no one was home) we called the cops and they asked if we had a "no trespassing" sign, and we were like "no, the yard is fenced, that she be enough of a hint to stay out" and the guy said if we were that worried to put up cameras, but we would have to not only put up the no trespassing sign but also a sign saying that there were cameras. WTF?! Anyways. We don't call the cops anymore really, we take it into our own hands. DH has jurisdiction anyways, and he just calls them after the fact.
If no one claims it, DH is thinking of getting a bike! It could magically disappear from your property if you need it to! (just kidding, kind of...)
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
I would totally do this. I've called the non-emergency number a few times to report odd things.
I've decided to start with my neighborhood listserv, and if no one claims it, I'll call the non-emergency police number.
Funny enough, 2 people have already responded to my post that they've had bikes stolen in the past 2 weeks or so (none that match the one dumped in my yard), so apparently someone has a thing for bikes around here...
