Holiday traveling

Would you consider going on vacation for Thanksgiving/Christmas/significant holiday, with your immediately family only?

Re: Holiday traveling

  • Heck yes. DH and I are having our own family Thanksgiving this year. Im so excited.
  • No, I don't think so. I like to be at home for the holidays. The thought of traveling and having to deal with family and the holidays all at once is not appealing.

  • No, because I don't like being trapped somewhere with my family. In fact, my mother travels so badly that we have all sworn to never go outside the city limits with her, ever again. EVER.

It's one thing to go visit our family up north, because if something really bad did go down, not that it ever would go that way, we'd still have plenty of friends to stay with and see. But when you're on 'vacation' with family, you feel like you've paid to be there, so you're more likely to stay and put up with the sh!tstorm and then wonder why you did.

ETA: my BIL and SIL typically go on an annual vacation with her family at Thanksgiving to either St Lucia, or, this year, to Disney. And from what I hear, it is mostly relaxing, but SIL's sister dumps her responsibility of her kids immediately on SIL, so she ends up having 4 kids instead of 2 for the duration, and her mother also tends to lose all sense of the fact that not everyone wants to do what she wants to do 24 hours a day and pouts if they don't, so there's that. So even though they're in a beautiful place 'relaxing', it isn't that relaxing.

In fact, we tend to run into that with any of the older mothers in the family.

  • With parents? Hell no! Just the 3 of us, sure.

  • Absolutely with my immediate family. Being with them is what is important to me and not so much where we are. If I have a preference though it is to be home.

  • I think by "immediate family only," you mean just Dh and your kids if you have any, right? That's how I'm understanding it.

We've talked about it. I don't know though. I love the holidays and being with my extended family, so I'm not sure we would ever do it.

I don't think I would want to skip Christmas, but we plan to take a trip to NYC one Thanksgiving.

  • Oh, really? I thought by immediate family you meant DH and your literal immediate family on either side. I certainly wouldn't mind traveling with DH and Michael only.

Ditto exactly. :)ETA: Wait, I will specify with MY immediate family only. H, sister, mom, dad, dogs. :)
  • I would probably never hear the end of it if we went on vacation for Thanksgiving, but considering we don't celebrate Christmas, that would not be a problem.

ETA: For the purpose of answering this Q, I am considering immediate family just myself, DH and DD.  Is that what you meant?

Me three.  DH and I always have a blast with my family - where ever we are.

  • As for DH and I only, I think we would consider it, but it's hard to imagine not spending Christmas/Thanksgiving with at least some other family. Other holidays I wouldn't care much about.

As for my immediate family - mom, dad, brother - well that's what we did last Christmas. They went with Dh and I to Morocco and we were there over Christmas and New Years. From the traveling perspective, it wasn't bad which we sorta knew beforehand since we've traveled with them before. From the holiday perspective - I thought it would be weird, but in a way it was nice to be doing something totally different. My whole life we've gone to Virginia for Christmas and it's getting more and more depressing as more of my older family members are passing away. And just staying at my parents house in Jax doesn't really feel like Christmas either. So going away and doing something fun and different was a good change.

I would love to go to NYC for either Christmas or Thanksgiving.  I think that seeing the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade might be on my unofficial bucket list.

  • If we're just talking DH & I then yes, I would consider traveling. I would feel sad about leaving Amsterdam and the kitties though.

  • Yes, I'd love to do Christmas alone since we won't be going to Ohio.. but we'll have to see his parents. We always do Thanksgiving in Cincinnati, we both LOVE it and always look forward to it!
