XP: Favorite Holiday Kids' Books

I posted on the toddler boards but am not getting many responses.

So, anyone have any favorite holiday kids' books?  I'm looking at Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas books so tell me what your kids' favorites are or what books you remember loving as a kid.

My big boy is bounding towards 3! Hoping to add a sibling. image Hipster dog is not impressed.

Re: XP: Favorite Holiday Kids' Books

  • Twas the Night Before Christmas- make sure you read the actual book before buying because there are a lot of variations

    Polar Express

    Elf on a Shelf

    Grich!!

My kids really love the cheesiest (but simplest) board books about the holidays. My mom buys them at Target around the holiday and they read them all year long!

  • Another vote for cheesy board books and pop-up books. For Halloween, Big Pumpkin (can't remember the author) is our favorite. For Christmas: The Polar Express and An Angel Came to Nazareth ( even though I am not religious, DH is and it is a beautiful book).
  • SO many!! I haven't pulled out our Hallowen books yet so I don't recall them all off-hand (it's always fun to bring them out each year and see them again!).

A couple of our favorites are "Scary, Scary Halloween" (not scary, and has amzing illustrations) and "In the Haunted House"....both by Eve Bunting.  a few others I can think of:  "There Was An Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything", "By the Light of the Halloween Moon", "Where's My Mummy". For toddlers, both of my girls loved "Hallowen Jack" mostly b/c the eyes of the bat at the end light up and play music. :)

We have loads of Christmas books too. In addition to the ones listed above we like "Velveteen Rabbit", "The Night Before the Night Before Christmas" "Merry Un-Christmas", "Santa Claus is Comin' to Town" (the one by J. Fred Coots has wonderful, lively illustrations), "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer" (I love the Golden book version b/c it's the book version of the claymation series from the 70's). I absolutely love the version of "The Night Before Christmas"...it's so well illustrated with some glossy embossing that I don't even leave it in the kids' reach (only when I'm around)...I want it to last for our grandchildren! It's the traditional Clement C. Moore version, but look for the one with artwork by Tom Newsom. It's hard to find new copies for under $100 but a gently used copy can be found for a few dollars.  And for toddlers, my girls loved (my 4 y/o still loves) "Jingle Bugs"....again, it has lights and music at the end. We've had to replace it twice over the years. :)

I'm sure to think of more. Will update if I do.

  • Llama Llama Holiday Drama (we love all of the Llama Llama books)

  • I have a 30 year old copy of The Bernestein Bears Spooky Old Tree that I can't wait to read to L this year. My mom read it to us and then when she was done, she'd pop in the cassette that came with the book so we could hear all the scary noises.

She also read us a book about going trick or treating - memorizing that story was actually how I learned to read - but that one we had pre-house fire (our house burned down when we were kids) and I've been looking on Amazon for it all afternoon.

  • If you're at all celebrating Christmas as a religious holiday the book "Tonight you are my baby" is beautiful. It's Mary telling Jesus how he's destined for other things but tonight you are my baby. When I read it to my old MDO class I kept tearing up and the kids looked at me like I was insane.

For Halloween, Five little pumpkins was always a hit with the little crowd. My mom loved to read us the Ghost Eye Tree but I didn't care for it as a kid. Looking at it now it does have beautiful verse.

  • Y'all are going to put me in the poor house with all these suggestions, thanks!  I LOVE books, especially kids' books. Big Smile  I think if/when the history industry goes kaput in Houston I want to be a children's librarian.  Too bad I'd have to go back to school (again) for that.
