Where should DH and I move to???
So, DH and I were talking yesterday about relocating? We currently live in So. Cal and have both been thinking for a while that we would be interesting in living somewhere with slower pace of life. We would love to live in a place that has a lower cost of living so we could afford for me to stop working. DH is a high school science teacher.
But, we don?t even know how to start doing research about new areas. We both always lived in this general area, so we aren?t sure where to start. We would be willing to live anywhere on the west coast, and some parts of Arizona and Colorado.
Disclaimer: Of course we will have to make the final decision ourselves? this is truly preliminary ?research.? We won't make a life changing decision like this base on any one thing someone says here. We just want to get the juices flowing and hear from people what they look for and what they like/dislike about their areas. Also, I posted this over on GP, as well.

I moved from Los Angeles to Boise, ID last summer. I was going through a divorce so I moved to be closer to my parents who moved here a year earlier. I also work from home so I didn't need to get a new job.
Boise is a very nice place to live and quite different from CA. It has all 4 seasons but nothing too extreme... This past winter it only snowed a few times and the summer has been beautiful. It rains more than in LA but not that much to be honest.
Boise is a great place to have children...it's very family oriented with a low cost of living and it's a very family focused community.
Boise has a lot to offer if you love the outdoors, camping, biking, skiing, etc.
Boise is not a great place to be single or move to without a job. Most people my age (30) are married and it has high unemployment. It is also quite far from another major city. It takes at least 6 hours to get to Salt Lake or Portland. There aren't any direct flights to the east coast. It's expensive to fly anywhere from Boise.
I am actually moving away from Boise this week because I am going on a short term assignment to Australia for work
I enjoyed my time in this town...It's a great place to come home to.

Have you ever thought about just moving to a different area within California? There are tons of different types of places to live within the state, and COL will be lower in the Central Valley areas...
Teacher employment and slowed down immensely in Texas due to budget cuts, and if he doesn't have his Texas certification in place prior to applying for positions, he is unlikely to be hired.
The COL is low here and urban and suburban districts pay well (around 42k for your first year). Many of your rural school districts can only afford the base salary which begins around 27k for a first year teacher, and you will find lots of districts that fall somewhere between those numbers. Once you take in account health insurance for a family though, I don't think you'll find you can afford to be a SAHM.
I took that website's quiz and Baltimore came up #1 for me... how disappointing.
