I talked with my SIL this weekend. They will find out this week if he will be medically discharged. She thinks he will be discharged.
The tentative plan assuming he is discharged. It takes 5-6 months for the paperwork to be done. They will move back home. Not 2 hours away like there were but home as in down the street close to us (yay!). BIL will do whatever treatment they recommend but nothing drastic. Basically he will have to live a very healthy lifestyle. DH is going to have him work in his store - family takes care of one another!
So, he will receive full benefits and retirement pay and then will get paid for another job. This is a lot of change all at once. SIL is glad they will be home with family because she's feeling really alone out in Hawaii. She is sad we won't be there for baby #4's birth in December but they'll be home soon enough.
It's bittersweet really. So just keep them in your ts and ps. It's a lot of transition for the kids, especially the oldest who's in 5th grade and has had to change school's a lot.

Re: BIL update
All of this! Many Ts and Ps for a smooth transition!
That's great that they will be so close to you and that YH can give BIL a job!
Did he get a diagnosis? I don't remember...
Yes, sarcoidosis. It's an auto-immune disease with no cure. Lifespan outlook is good though. It's typically a mild thing that goes dormant unless sick. With that being said, he has a hard time breathing. He has nodules on his lungs, liver, and brain. It's sort of hard to do PT if you can't run and all which is why he'll most likely get discharged.
