Traffic question-15 north through MD

Next week DS and I are going to drive up to NY to meet my DH for a couple of days. We are going to head up on a Tuesday evening and I am trying to figure out the best route...mapquest is recommending 15 north to 81, and I'm just curious for those who might know, how bad is 15 north around 5pm or so? Would you rather deal with 15 north at that time or the toll road, beltway and 270?

And if you really have a lot of knowledge, one of the alternative routes being suggested is to take the beltway to 95, eventually taking the New Jersey turnpike...how late does this area stay yucky with traffic? We will be leaving from Sterling (possibly Ashburn) around 5pm. I am hoping to get an earlier start but I am not positive I will be able to get done with work earlier. Our final destination is a little town north of NYC near Poughkeepsie. Thanks for any input!

Re: Traffic question-15 north through MD

  • I would MUCH prefer 15 to 81 over your alternatives....even if 15 is a bit slow, which it only is really as you get through lburg, I think it will be better than anywhere on teh beltway or toll road.  have a good trip!
  • It's been pretty bad the past couple of weeks.  Not as bad as the combo of the beltway/270/95, but it won't be perfect.

There is a secret back route though.  As you come up route 7 get off at crosstrail blvd (or parkway?  one or the other).  The Wegmans exit.  Bear right in the exit lanes.  Go straight, through 2 lights then for a mile or so, the road curves left and a water treatment plant is in front of you as the speed limit slows down to 35 then 25.  It's a little back road that comes up on most GPS as unpaved, so most people don't go this way unless they know about it.  Anyway, it curves through some woods and past some little farms.  Then you come up a hill to a light and take a right on Battlefield.  Go down the hill, past the school (on your left), wave at my neighborhood, haha, then the next light will be 15 north.  Take a right.  This is the last light on the way out of town, where it narrows to one lane.  Bypass all the traffic.

  • You still have to go up 270 and through Frederick which is bad for traffic.  The next place for traffic for us is through Harrisburg on that route.  I would pick it over the beltway/95 route though, it is how we go up to NE PA, however we always go the 95 route through Baltimore if heading to NYC, we just try and time our departure to not hit rush hour.
