CD Moms

I'm going to give CDing a shot and see what it's like at least on a PT basis.  I'm looking for something that is super easy for a DH who is not on board 100% with CDing.  I am leaning towards pockets or AIO for ease with him and my MIL (although I know my MIL would have no problem with prefolds as she CDed her kids).  I told him I wanted to try it out and then we'll evaluate for us.  He is not on board completely, but said if it was no different than taking off a diaper, putting it in a pail (just like our Diaper Genie now!), and then putting on a new one he'd still be willing to change a diaper.  I do the laundry and handle poopie diapers (i.e. disposal of solids).

This is something I've been wanting to do before M was even born and now I just feel like if I don't try it, I'll always wonder if I could've done it as I know we'd save a lot of money considering we want two more little ones.

I bought 2 BG AIOs (one snap, one aplix) and 2 FB used from a friend to try.  Is there another brand you'd recommend I try as well?  TIA

Also, I'm open to hearing recommendations for detergent to use with a HE front load washer.  I did read the FAQs on the CD board on TB, but I still can't decide.  I'm most interested in Tide original, RnG, or maybe Ecos?  Any thoughts on these.  I don't think I'll try Charlie's due to the reports of rashes just b/c we've never ever had a rash on M before and I don't want to risk it.

Re: CD Moms

  • I'm obviously new, but I've been very happy thus far. The babies are CD about 50% of the time (in some part b/c they're still so small, and also b/c I didn't buy a lot of aio/pockets in tiny sizes, and my mom won't use the prefolds and balks at the velco AIOs too (though she has no reason other than "I like the disposables") and she changes them quite a bit while I'm at work). Anyway, I've been using Tide and so far so good. I wash every other day usually.  It takes like 10-15 minutes (put in washer, put in dryer/hang, sort & stuff in drawers).Granted, they're on breastmilk and the poop is water soluble right now (I plan to use liners later to help w/ that...I think Paige does too).

I have a pretty big brand assortment to try but I imagine we'll settle on a couple and I'll sell off the others (and get more of what works for us) once I see what fits the babies best (and once I know if we'll CD at daycare).  You might want to get a couple of BG 4.0 pockets since they dry faster than the AIOs too. I haven't used them yet but they tend to get rave reviews. Right now my favs are the Thirsties Duo Pockets, but I've heard there's a gap b/t size 1 and size 2 (not sure how big M is, but if she's over 20 lbs I'm sure size 2 will fit fine).

Thanks, Em.  I have to edit my OP, but I actually looked back and I got the BG 4.0 pockets that come with the newborn and regular inserts.  I'll probably try those at night with both the inserts for extra absorbency.  Mariela is probably around 21lbs and she's 32-ish", so long and lean.  I'll look into the Thirsties Duo Pockets for sure!  I want to try a few brands before I decide to go either route.

  • Based on what I've read on the CD board, you'll need more than the two for overnight - maybe try with two full inserts? We're obviously not there so I really have no idea how much they really pee overnight, haha! Good luck :)
  • As I haven't had any real experience, I've heard the hemp doublers or inserts or whatever they are can be recommended for overnights as well.

I'm still doing my research on detergents... I haven't made up my mind yet.

  • I'd go with pockets (AIO's take a long time to dry)

Sunbaby's are fairly cheap (check out the swaps that I put you on, on FB)

    BG's are obiviously well known.

    I haven't used any pockets so I can't help.

We had a terrible time with RnG, but CrunchyClean works awesome for us (ali n swan is the cheapest place to get it including shipping)

you can also try Zorb inserts, we just got 12 and we love them!  They absorb a ton

Again, one of the ladies on the Fluffy bums society is where I got them (new) for a dollar a piece!

Hemp is great, but it is a slower absorber

  • Thanks Christina!  I was totally going to do an ISO post on there for used ones of what you ladies recommended.  I trust you all more than the ladies i don't know on the CD board.  I figure if this doesn't work out, I'll just be reselling on there anyway!  M isn't a huge wetter anymore at night, so I'm not overly concerned about it with her, but want to be prepared JIC.

  • I'm a fan of Allen's Naturally for detergent.  However, it will depend on your water.  We have an HE, but it is a toploader HE and I can fill it with water before I fill it.  I'm a huge fan of prefolds with a thirsties cover.  GMD used to sell prefolds sewn into a fitted, and that's my favorite.  That's more daddy-friendly.  I don't know if they sell them anymore.  We have BGs for our daddy and daycare-friendly options (although our current daycare does prefolds, too).

That all being said, I haven't been shopping for diapers in a long time, so I'm not familiar with what's on the market now.  One of the good things about P being a peanut!

GMD still sells those ! I want to get some of them for the Newbie!

They are about 8dollars a piece and you can get them with snaps.

They are called GMD workhorse diapers

I think I meant to say bamboo-- not hemp-- i couldn't remember the material. When I ordered my BGs, I received an extra free microfiber insert so I have a massive package of 18 more inserts... not sure if that will help us but we'll see!

DH is anti-used dipes so we had to buy new.

Oh, I'm glad they have them again!  I bought a bunch during a clearance sale for less than $5/ ea I think over a year ago.  I think they were changing the design or something, and mine need a snappi.  I love them, they're the best of both worlds!

These are what I use. I wasn't sure if I wanted to CD full time plus DH wasn't 100% on borad so I bought a stash of these (ebay 20 for $80). They work great for us. Currently I'm still using the inserts they came with, which reviews say aren't that great, but I plan to buy better ones once it starts to become an issue. A fits into them rather well on the "medium" size and she's about 20 lbs and 30 in. I also just wash them in Tide Free.
