St. Wenceslaus & St. Vincent?

What can ya'll tell me about these two parishes? I need to hear the good, the bad, and the ugly! We have had a rough time with our parish in Wahoo, and I really want to put ourselves into a good parish when we move into Omaha next month. These are the two that are closest to where we are moving, so I was hoping that ya'll can give me some insight!

And if you don't want to broadcast the ugly stuff, you can email me at adybabe38@yahoo.com :)

Re: St. Wenceslaus & St. Vincent?

  • ST WENC!!  :)  But I'm pretty partial!  :)

I think St Vincent's has a better 'social' aspect to it, especially if you have little kids (under 5) and want to meet other parents with little kids (I know a few Nesties IRL who are pretty involved with that aspect of the parish). Other then that, I don't know much.  When we first moved into our Neighborhood we went to mass there since it was close and we didn't have the little guys yet, and I just wasn't impressed with the pastors or the 'crowd'.  We've gone there also a few times recently to Sunday Evening mass when we were OOT or had something going on and couldn't get to morning mass, and still not impressed.

I could tell you everything you wanted to know about St Wenc.  The parish, the school, etc.  I'm on several parish and school committees there.  The school is amazing (if you're looking to send A to catholic school) and there are a lot of social events, but it is one of the things they struggle with as far as getting people involved and trying to find more events to host.  It's going to be our main focus this year and we are in the process of surveying the parish to see what everyones needs are.  But there are plenty of things to get involved with, just need to get the word out there to parents.

I'm the chair of the Total Education Committee which focuses on development and interaction between all aspects of Religious Ed in the parish (school, CCD, youth, teen, adult, etc) and finding activities and projects that all of those groups can come together and work on as a whole.  I'm also a chair of the New Parent Committee for the school, so working with new school families in all grades, assigning them a current school family to be their mentor for their first year, and planning socials and activities for new families to the school so they can meet and get to know other families and have a go to person for any questions or concerns they may have.

St Wenc has an amazing parish and school staff, new preschool program, a wonderful new Pastor that I think is going to do amazing things for both the School and Church as far as events and social teachings, and a really dedicated Principal/Vice Principal who have been with the school off and on over the last 10 years as teachers/administrators and have really high goals and amazing new programs for the kids.

Let me know if you have any specific questions! You have my email still?

  • I have a lot of family that belong to St. Wenc and I have been there for mass and craft fairs. I have no complaints about the church. It seems to be very good and has excellent community envolvement. If I lived out west my future kids would attend this parish.

St. Vincent I don't know too much about, but I had a cousin who went there and from what I remember you had to donate a lot to the school. Of course every parish survives off donations but it seemed like you had to donate so much just to attend school there. ---this was about 10 years ago so it may have changed since then.

  • I have friends that go to both and are quite happy.

I'm not sure how it works in the Catholic church but can you go to both and try them out??

Yea and we probably will attend both to make the ultimate decision. But I just wanted to see if anyone would give me some negative insight on either. I know there are a TON of negative things I could tell people about our current church, so I kind of was just looking for a heads up! :)

  • Hello!  We go to SVdP and Love it!  Another nestie and I are actually the co-chairs of the Parents with Young Children group which is an awesome group of families with children under 5 years of age.  We plan events each month that include a variety of things from events at the parish to events outside of the parish.  If you would like mroe info on that you can send me a message- we have an awesome event coming up on the 24th that you may want to come check out to get a feel for it.

We don't have any experience with the school yet but have heard great things about it and we plan to send our kiddos there.  Like every parish they like to see that you donate time or financially as a member, but there is no set amount you have to donate in roder for your chidlren to go there.  In fact, I know a few people who started their kiddos in Kinder. this year and have never donated a dime to the church but have volunteered some time instead.

It's a very young church which I like and there are tons of social things going on.

  • Also, forgot to add that preschool is being offered starting next fall-
  • I think both are great parishes, and they have their perks. However, I would tend to say from my experiences working with both churches each 3 times a year,  they are fairly different.

St. Wenc, is more school/church from my observations where as SVdP is School/Church/Organizations (like the ones mentioned in PP).  There seems to be a lot more to be involved in up there, or at least participation.  That being said.. I think the acoustics at SVdP are not that great. So, if you want to go to mass and hear, thats the downside. When we were deciding between St. Pats & SVdP this was a big deal to me. (I know.. its silly but I want to get stuff out of mass rather than think about how I hate the echos).  Now, I think Fr. Kampschneider is so sweet, and I believe the better priest of the two parishes, when it comes to friendly and welcoming.

I think you should attend both, see where you are most comfortable, and where you feel most welcomed. :)
