Has anyone worked with a career counselor and was it helpful? Do you have any recommendations for someone to contact? I've been down the route of using the career center at my alma mater. They did all the interest inventories, etc. which were kind of helpful, but I feel like a lot of the advice and information they gave was applicable to someone just starting out, and I've been out of school for about eight years now. Any insight is appreciated and thanks!
Re: Career Counselor
Have you read "What color is your parachute?" I found it to be pretty good.
Have you tried shadowing in some of the areas you are interested in? That may also help. GL
Thanks! I haven't read it, but it has been recommended by a couple of friends as well so I will pick it up. I think my problem now is identifying the things that I would like to do. I guess I really need someone to help me sort out my transferable skills and such and make a plan for getting to the next point in my career. I like the industry that I'm in, I just don't like the kind of work that I'm doing right now.
I totally understand how you feel! I have a Corporate Communications degree, but worked in retail for 10 years.
It took a sales job at a medical publishing company (I lasted 3 months) and some reflection time to help me to realize I wanted to go the healthcare route!
It took two years, but I just graduated from Jefferson and couldn't be happier with my choice (now I just need to find a job!)
Hope you have as much success
My degree is in Corp. Communications too. I currently work in higher ed. The hardest part, for me at least, is actually thinking about what I want to do, since I've been doing the same thing for so long. It's scary.
Congratulations on your graduation Jefferson--I'll keep my fingers crossed that you find a job soon!
