Ok, THIS is funny...

from a Singer Sewing Machine Manual, 1948:

Prepare yourself mentally for sewing. Think about what you are going
to do... never approach sewing with a sigh or lackadaisically. Good
results are difficult when indifference predominates.

Never try to sew with a sink full of dirty dishes or beds unmade. When there are urgent housekeeping chores, do these first so your mind is free to enjoy your sewing...
When you sew, make yourself as attractive as possible. Put on a clean dress. Keep a little bag full of French chalk near your sewing machine to dust your fingers at intervals. Have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on... (If) you are constantly fearful that a visitor will drop in or your husband will come home and you will not look neatly put together, you will not enjoy your sewing as you should...

  • Thanks for the great laugh.

If I waited until my house was clean, I had on clean dress, and lipstick, I would never get to sew.  I think the only dresses that I own are much  too dressy for sewing.  Clean pj's is more my speed. Stick out tongue

Well, I hope you are, at least, wearing your pearls!

  • I didn't start sewing until noon today, but I'd been awake since 4:45. Before I sat at my machine I'd put on makeup, made the bed, cleaned my kitchen, cleaned the dining room, vacuumed...

I was wearing athletic shorts and a tank top, though.  I was, however, wearing a bra.  Does that count for anything?

  • I love it - this is exactly how I do al my sewing - yeah, right.

    I am totally reposting this!

  • Some of that is true for me.  If the house isn't clean, I can't enjoy anything I'm doing.
  • Who knew that all this time of making sure my finger waves looked right and my red lipstick was perfect while sewing is in the rules!

If they made a sewing with a hot water foot bath in front of it for while I'm sewing (like they do for my oven!) I'd be heaven.

  • Are you sure that it didn't say to make sure that the cream of crap casserole is on the table when dh walks in the door at 5:30 pm?
  • I have and love that book. I always get a good LOL out of it. And its actually has almost everything you should know about sewing. Bonus!

  • LMFAO!!!

DH and I always joke that it's a good thing I want a career, because I would be the WORSE housewife  EVER!!! My kitchen is still a disaster from our cookout Monday!

  • I'm such a fail as I'm sewing today instead of cleaning the house.  I have not showered yet (it's 5pm) and the house is a complete disaster.  I'm glad I was born in the 80s and not long before!
  • This is great! Big Smile

This one is my favorite: "have your hair in order, powder and lipstick put on..." Especially since I only put make-up on when I have to!

    Yes

  • LOL!  Thank you for sharing this, it gave me a great laugh!!!  I was literally sewing today in an oatmeal-stained t-shirt and gym shorts, with my hair all wild and frizzy b/c I didn't bother to dry it after a shower - - started working on some "small thing" during breakfast, and assumed I'd get up in just a minute or two to go comb my hair and change my shirt - - looked up at some point and realized it was 2 pm :)
