S/O meds when PG

So I have been thinking about this one for awhile but I am wondering if any of you have first hand experience.

I have had migraines since I was 9, they are bad.  At the moment they are controlled my medication for the most part, but I am pretty sure I will have to go off the meds months before I even TTC.

I am on topomax to prevent and zomig when I get a headache.

So what did you do if you get migraines?  Did you get more?  Did you miss a lot of work?  Can you get head and neck massages during the 1st trimester?

This scares the crap out of me, I laugh at Tylenol.

Re: S/O meds when PG

  • I had migraines pre-pregnancy. I didn't get a single one the entire time I was pregnant. I did, however, get two killer sinus infections. I went to see an accupuncturist for those and used a neti pot (google it if you've never used one, I swear by mine).

You could investigate the accupuncturist route. I also had a pre-pregnancy back injury and my insurance covered therapeutic massages the whole time I was pregnant. These might work for migraines (???).

I started getting migraines again when my period returned 15 months after giving birth. But I had a blissful 24 months migraine-free before that.

  • How strange Anna and amazing!  Can you get neck and head massages during the 1st trimester?

I have insurance here, but it does not cover maternity unless I have complications.  I think we will just have to budget for that type of thing though as w/o meds I cannot work for days.

Are you on meds for your headaches?

  • I don't know about migraines but I was getting head and neck massages my whole pregnancy. As well as full body (when the place I went to did pregnancy massages) and foot massages.

I know pregnancy can sometimes relieve certain medical issues, maybe that will happen?

I am not sure if you can get head and neck massages in the first tri, it's worth asking a doctor. All of my massages were from 2nd tri on, simply because it took that long for my insurance to process all the paperwork and give me the green light to schedule my therapeutic massages.

I used to take Imitrex a long, long time ago, but didn't love it. Then I tried switching BCP brands because my OB/Gyn thought it might be related to hormones (clearly, my whole pg experience seems to have proven that). I am not taking anything now, but I get them much less frequently than I used to. The last migraine I had this year was in May.

  • I love prenatal massage. Ever massage place I've been to has had a strict no first trimester policy. As soon as I hit 13 weeks, I was booking appointments.

  • I too have migraines and am on Imitrex. We are starting TTC this month and i guess Imitrex are such a big part of my life I didn't even think about getting off of them. I will be watching this thread for more answers.

A while back, my neurologist in Philly told me that there are very good chances the migraines will cool off during the pregnancy (and may or may not come back after) since mine are related to hormones. I am keeping my fingers crossed!

Also, I know I asked the question here a while back but I did find an insurance that would cover pregnancy 10 months after you've been covered. Let's see how that works.

  • My SIL gets awful migraines but the only time she had relief was when she was pregnant--not a single migraine during the entire 9 months.  I don't know if there's a relation to being pg and migraines but maybe you'll be lucky like her.

  • I have a history of getting horrible visual migraines. In addition to a headache, I get extremely blurred vision, floating stars in my vision, nausea, and vomiting. (Gross, sorry.) Needless to say, migraines put me pretty much out of commission until they pass. Since getting pregnant, I am 22 weeks right now, I have only had two, one lasted 5 days, the other just one day. Not ideal, but it wasn't the end of the world. I just have to be super careful to avoid things that I know are triggers and hope for the best other than that. My doctor also mentioned that many people have less migraines during pregnancy.

Not sure about head and neck massages.

  • I get migraines as well, and pregnancy threw them all out of whack.  In my case they got worse because the hormones were in overdrive and all I was told I was a loud to do was meditate and lay in a cold dark room.  I have never been one for meditating but there was lots of laying in cold dark rooms and crying because the pain was so bad. ( Yikes I just read that, sorry if that scares you.)

My doctor at the time did allow regular tylenol or panadol after the first trimester and head and neck massages though out..but only with a physiotherapist, (or anyone who understands the rules about pregnancy and massages...it all basically revolves around blood clots, which is why apparently you aren't supposed to get leg massages, etc.  That did not do me allot of good when they struck at 2am...but it was nice during the day. Also, like others have said, sometimes during pregnancy migraines completely go away.  A woman in my pre-natal class was like that apparently...so you never know.

  • Can I put my vote in for chiropractics? They can actually do a scan to see if there's a reason in your spine/neck that is causing the vertebrate--so they can both identify where the problem is and then do a scan after some treatments to show if it's improving. The technology is super cool--it was originally developed by NASA to monitor astronauts! I am not sure if you can get the scan once you are pregnant, but you could certainly get it before and see if they could continue treatments during parts of your pregnancy--using modified techniques that keep baby (and mom!) safe of course.

I started getting migraines at college and chiropractics was hugely helpful for me--to the point where I would go a couple of years without a migraine. Blissful relief, I tell you.
