Food related stories anyone?

http://lostwisdomfound.blogspot.com/2011/09/baked-french-toast-ends-in-domestic.htmlI was just finishing up today's blog post and it made me think of an incident six months ago where I had a complete breakdown in Sainbury's "Italian" aisle as I could not find any of the basic ingredients that I grew up cooking with.   I figured you ladies probably have some amusing food related stories withyour relocations... care to share?  PS... sorry for the link right at the top.. it seems to be a bit special this morning linking or pasting.. or maybe its me... maybe I should make another cup of coffee in case it is me

Re: Food related stories anyone?

  • When DH and I were living in Japan, the second day I was there we went to the grocery store to get some food for the apartment.  I couldn't read a SINGLE thing and none of the food looks familiar.  I ended up leaving DH in the grocery store to finish shopping while I went to sit in the car.  BAWLING!  I cried for the next hour or so...it was ridiculous.  Jet lag definitely didn't help matters either.  The next trip was much better.

  • When we were living in Vietnam, we were headed to a friend's house for a dinner party. She called while we were on our way and asked me to bring eggs. I didn't know the word for egg and stopped at 3 food vendors asking for some. They didn't understand me so I had to play charades and act out a chicken laying an egg. Thank goodness that third stall had some. I made sure to learn that word: tr?ng
  • The thought of you squaking like a chicken, flapping your arms, then crouching as if you needed to go to the BR just made my dishwashing break much more amusing.

     :)

  • I also had an arm flapping experience when I was living in Israel.  I was asking the butcher for chicken wings and had to flap my arms and pretend to cut of my arms before he got the idea.

I've had many experiences just breaking down crying in the supermarket after not being able to figure out what anything is.

  • I don't have it nearly as bad as many of you. My only food related F-up was when I asked the guy at the fish counter to take the heads off the shrimp. It was the first time I had ordered anything other than chicken breast in the supermarket and I thought I was doing it right - I mean, he's got the big knives, he can take the heads off easily, right?

He looked at me, picked up a shrimp, twisted, and put it the bag. He laughed when, shocked, I said "I CAN DO THAT!" He took the rest of the heads off after having a good laugh.

  • When I was an au pair and had *basic* French, the kids and I decided to make a cake. I found the cake mix easily but I couldn't find any premade frosting (something I didn't realize doesn't really exist outside the US!). Eventually I found a tube of something dark with a frosting like texture, so I thought I had found a chocolate frosting.

The kids I went home and made the cake, we decided to try the chocolate "frosting" before putting it on the cake. I put a little bit on a spoon and took a bite, it was the the *worst* thing I have ever tasted in my life. The kids were shocked by the face I made and asked what was wrong with it, I told them we would not be putting it on the cake, it was not chocolate!

Later on I asked their mom what the "frosting" was that I bought, it was actually a Swiss version of Marmite, that she happens to love. Blech!
