marriage license question, new here

Hi everyone, quick question...I am new here and was wondering when did you get your marriage license? I can not remember if I was told how I would get it or if I am just drawing a blank. Do I get it in the mail? Do I go to pick it up at the city hall we got it in? TIA!

Re: marriage license question, new here

  • Welcome to the board and congratulations!

I don't remember exactly, but I'm sure my marriage license didn't take more than 1 or 2 weeks to arrive. It comes in the mail, but the amount of time it takes also depends on how long it takes the JP or clergy to get it in the mail.

  • We just went to Town Hall to apply and then picked it up a few days later.  You can probably visit you city/town website and see what's required for the license.

  • Are you referring to actually applying for your license or getting your certified copy?

To apply you have to go to any town's hall with your ID and pick it up ~2-3 days later (I forget the exact wait time). At that time you can give them a self addressed, stamped envelope to send you your certified copy. Ours came about 2 weeks after our wedding (but it depends on how quickly you mail it back to the Town Hall after your wedding).

  • Ditto MrsC, I think you're talking about your marriage certificate, not license. I got married out of state so I'm no help with your actual question though. I think we picked ours up.

  • We had to pick our certificate up at city hall, about 2-3 weeks after the wedding. Just call the town hall where you applied originally, and they'll let you know if they mail it automatically, or if you have to pick it up.
    Congrats!
  • Am I a total dumb dumb? I could have sworn it came in the mail. I might be cracking up, though.

Silly, both MrsC and 5000Candles said it could come in the mail :)

So I AM cracking up? LOL

I did not get enough sleep last night.

I'm sorry though, sleep deprivation totally sucks.

  • ditto the others - call the town hall where you filed for it and they'll tell you.  We had to pick ours up, but I know other towns will mail it to you.

  • I actually had to go to town hall and pick it up. I'm not sure how long it took we went on our honeymoon and it was ready when we got back (we went for a week)
  • Thank you everyone! I was refering to the certificate, we got married a month ago yesterday :-)  I will call city hall tomorrow and see what they say.
