Bringing Meal to Friend Who Had Baby
What would you recommend? I have never had a baby (nor have I ever brought someone a meal). It sounds like, from other boards, that baked pastas (lasagnas, ziti, mac'n'cheese, etc.) are brought by everyone, so it might be overkill. I'm looking for a unique suggestion that doesn't take too much culinary experience. Any ideas of things that any of you mothers craved or that others have had rave reviews on? Thanks!
Re: Bringing Meal to Friend Who Had Baby
How about a beef and bean chili, with corn bread?
Or, sometimes, instead of a big meal - I will bring bagels, flavored cream cheese, and fruit salad. Especially if it's right after the birth, and they're likely to have company stopping over.
Another idea - a "grab-n-go" basket... with things that are healthy'ish but prepackaged. Pre-cut cheese slices or cheese sticks. Packs of crackers. Energy bars. Stuff that a new mom can grab out of the fridge or cupboard and eat with one hand.
It also wouldn't be a bad idea to get them a bunch of Let's Dish meals. They're packaged in small portions and super easy/quick to cook. So that way they could have variety for multiple meals and not have to heat up an entire casserole at once.

I would have LOVED either of these this summer. We were so over the carb-y heavy dinners, and my problem was a baby that I couldn't put down during the day...one hand snacks and bars, or breakfasty foods would have been a lifesaver.
A pan of enchiladas to bake is my favorite dish to bring to my new mom friends. I don't put the sauce on top, I let the new parents add as much as they want. I bring a bag of salad and also some spanish rice and some cookies and it's been a huge hit. (I also love it because I double the batch and make a pan for myself). Good luck, Jenn
This chicken pot pie recipe is my go-to because it can be just heat and eat or frozen until they're ready to do so.
if she is nursing I would not bring anything with beans (or other gassy food), garlic or onions.
We did like the chicken pot pie that was brought to us. Also, we had friends bring the ingredients for a good salad and after 5 days in the hospital it was really yummy.
One handed snacks were awesome when I had DD in May. I wish we had gotten more.
Muffins, cheese sticks, granola bars, trail mix, etc. Plus, if she is nursing, she will probably be hungry all the time, so it is nice to have healthy munchies around the house.
Just ask them. My friend is due any day now and she asked for something meat and potatoes like so I asked her if Beef Stew would be alright and she said yes yes yes.
