Hello! I'm surprising DH with a trip to Portland (he's from there) for his 40th in November. I'm planning a small party with his friends, and am looking for ideas on where to have it.
We are staying at the Portland Harbor Hotel, so we want somewhere nearby, casual atmosphere, bar food menu, and with a side/back area that they will dedicate to us for a few hours. I plan on looking into RiRah; any other ideas? Brian Boru? I'm trying to remember the bars we used to go to when I was dating DH and would visit him there, but that's going back 10 years. He talkes about the three doors to hell - is that the three bars down on the water? Thank you!!

Re: Bars in Portland
What a fun idea! DH surprised me with a stay at the Portland Harbor Hotel for my 30th...we live nearby, but it was a lot of fun to stay and the room was amazing! We were upgraded at check-in, so, if you're comfortable, ask when you arrive or maybe call the day before. I know you didn't ask, but we did stay there for breakfast, which we found a bit pricey and underwhelming, so you may want to try breakfast elsewhere (I'm happy to offer recommendations, if you're interested!)
RiRa is great for groups...I've seen other parties there, so you may want to call and chat with them about what they can offer. Sign up for the enewsletter, too...I get coupons and info on specials all the time.
I don't know about the Three Doors to Hell, lol, but maybe someone who has been here longer than I have can fill you in. Also, I haven't been to Brian Boru, but it does always seem like a good time when we've walked by.
Our favorite beer bar is Novare Res...a lot of fun, huge selection of beers from around the world, though none of the standbys, like Bud/Bud Light, etc, which I know some people might be disappointed with. They also have a great menu.
We also like Rivalries...a few blocks outside of the downtown area. It's a nicer sports bar, with good food and a friendly staff...DH goes there sometimes during football season to watch games and loves it.
Gritty McDuff's is a brew pub that makes pretty good beer and offers samplers and a full food menu.
Thanks!! I'm going to start making some calls.
oh $3 Deweys... DH and I spent many nights there when we were dating!!! Brings back a lot of memories.

I had a party at Rivalries on the top floor and it was perfect for a large gathering. One of the gals here had her rehearsal dinner there, too. It's downtown Portland and a good spot to start out before hitting all of the above mentioned bars :-)
and yes, the three doors of hell are on on commercial street. I believe only two, maybe one, still exists. My friend is a dispatcher for the PPD and referenced the Three Doors as quite the establishments :-)
