Forgive me for being a stalker, but I literally within the last 24 hours have been lurking on the nurseries board and saw your post re: room darkening curtains. That's what I ended up getting for the kid's room. The sky blue curtain so far seems to cut most of the light, but not all. But it definitely makes a huge difference. I wanted that specifically for his room because his window (along with ours) faces east so the sun will be the worst in the morning and would hit him no matter where we put the crib. I bought this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001SAH004
I only used the short panel since I have one window and, as you can see, it had plenty of length and I still have the floor length panel should I need it. Also, if you have Amazon prime, you get an extra $5 off, along with the free 2 day shipping. Obviously he's not here yet so I can't speak specifically to my/his experience so far, but when I woke up this morning, the room was dark. GL!
edit - I also have horizontal blinds in that window behind the curtain.
Re: jend
Stalk away!
I'm just wondering if we actually need them. I guess it's just one of those things that depends on your kid and everyone has a different option. Some opinions I've read say not to use them because you should get the baby used to sleeping anywhere and setting their circadian rhythm. This is where I am leaning (we also have the nursery in the front of the house in hopes the baby gets used to the road noise). We do have mini-blinds and I was planning to use the khaki-colored curtains I already have in the room.

**butting in**
There's a nursery board?
**faints**
oh yeah, I stumbled across that gem Sunday night. but like most bump boards, a lot of posts are seriously eyeroll worthy.
We have room darkening curtains in Emma's room. They are probably more useful now for naps and putting her to bed before dark in the summer than when she was a newborn. She would sleep anywhere when she was a newborn. I don't think they have messed up her sleep patterns, but I know every baby is different.
We have these, or something similar; http://www.jcpenney.com/jcp/X6.aspx?GrpTyp=STY&ItemID=15527e0&submit%20search.y=0&Ntt=thermal&SearchString=thermal&hdnOnGo=true&Ne=4+840+877+878+5+961+6+968+29+3+598+11+15+12+506+10+23+585+596+963+579+1031+8+1022+1014+586+1007+879+1027+18+904+903+969+833+949&NOffset=0&SelDim=4~&submit%20search.x=0&Nao=0&N=4294959029+4294966835&SO=0&PSO=0&CmCatId=searchresults
We also went for room darkening, as opposed to blackout. And these are thermal, they keep her room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. Added bonus!
This whole post blows my mindhole. Remember back in the olden days when you're parents just threw you in whatever room they had available and the curtains were probably regular curtains and no one cared if they were blackouts/roomdarkening/thermal?
my future kid is effed. I already spend a crapton on shades that let a shitton of light in and I'm not buying new ones.
My little nuggets
If you don't buy them all new curtains and shades, that makes you a horrible Mom. ;-)
I needed curtains anyway. Room was basically empty and had no curtains or blinds before babe.
I know, I don't even know why I asked. The baby is sucking all rational thinking from my brain.

This makes me laugh because I have been pretty good about this stuff with the baby, but I felt that way about wedding planning. I was a crazy person.
