For those with smart phones
How much data do you use?
We're getting our iphones this week and was looking at Verizon's data plans. They have a 2GB and 5GB. Just how much is 2GB? I will only be using the phone to check/send email, perhaps occasionally stream videos and music, so I am thinking that 2 is enough but I would hate to go over and get screwed with the overage charges.

Re: For those with smart phones
First, I'd wait! The rumors are getting stronger and stronger that the iPhone 5 will be released the first week of October. I've been waiting since April, lol, so I'm a little crazy. But anyway, even if you don't care about having the latest, they may drop the price of the 4 when they start offering the 5; that was one of the strong rumors.
Second, 2GB is probably just fine for what you're going to do. I'd ask them, but I'm pretty sure their policy of upgrading to 5GB if you have gone over is pretty liberal. It's just that if you pick 5GB and use way under, they aren't going to let you switch to the less expensive plan.
THIS about everything. If you wait you can either get teh snazzy new phone or the cheaper older phone. win win. Verizon is also great--if you go over, it would be for one month and you can then upgrade to the 5GB plan without a problem and then go back down to the 2GB later if you decide to.
For what it is worth I am 21 days into my Verizon billing cycle and I have used just over 1 GB. And I listen to Pandora from my phone for a good hour or two a day, plus use it for data alone about 1-3 hours a day (totally depending on the day, most days it is closer to 1 hour, but on vacation last week I used like maybe 2?) I think 2GB is going to cover you just fine.

I just discovered that AT&T has a 'data usage calculator' where you can plug in what you think you'll use your phone for and it'll estimate your usage. I think it was AT&T anyway.
When we got ours the salesguy said that unless we were using the phone for work 2GB should be fine. FWIW I use my phone every day to check email, play games, internet etc. Last month I only used 200MB. So you get A LOT for the 2GB
I just checked mine and I'm at .47GB on day 10 of 30. I use my phone a lot though especially on sites that are blocked at work and sometimes I let pandora play in the background all day long.
2GB should be fine but just keep an eye on it and change your plan accordingly.

H is pulling one over on me.
First, he said I had to wait until my current phone is up to get a smart phone. My phone was up August 2. THEN he said I have to wait for 4G in our area. 4G went live here like 2 weeks ago! NOW he says I have to wait for family data plans.
GRRRRRRR. I want a smartphone and I want it now! *stamps feet*

Had a dream I was queen.
Woke up. Still queen.
Verizon has a usage calculator, too. Also, if you're talking about Verizon, you can increase your plan only for one month if you have a particularly high-usage month; I actually have a little monitor thingy on my phone that tells me how much data I've used, and there is an app to log in and check your usage if you don't want it cluttering up your 'desktop'.
That being said, I am at less than 0.5 GB and I only have three days less in this cycle. I don't stream music or movies, but I use my phone a lot for less data-heavy applications (texting, checking e-mail, reading posts on TN, google searches, maps/directions/navigation, Facebook).
Sounds like 2 will be enough.
DH and I talked about waiting until next month for the iphone 5 but I don't know if we have the patience! Upgrading from my lame phone that has only text, talk, and a camer to any smart phone would be a vast improvement.
