BWToddlers: Shoes off?

Is it just Jane or do your kids take their shoes off all.the.damn.time?  It's mostly in the car and I think rear facing is the culprit.  She's very tall and her legs are all mashed up on to the seat back so there are her shoes - staring her in her face.  It's not that big of a deal but she takes them off and then chucks them leading me on a wild shoe chase every time we need to get out of the car.

I've started just taking them off when I buckle her in but (a) I want her to learn to keep them on and (2) winter is coming!

The only ones she keeps on are her lace-up converse.  So, I'm guessing part of the answer is harder-to-remove shoes.  Anyway, anyone else's LO do this and how do you get around it?

Re: BWToddlers: Shoes off?

  • Yep, we have that issue, and Alex went front facing at one. The kid just hates wearing shoes. Her sandals are the worst because they're the easiest to get off. However, if I put shoes on her that are harder to remove, she'll scream "shoe off" until I pull the thing off while driving or we get home. Fun times in the car with that. She also has to have her shoes and socks removed the second her feet touch the entryway. I'm still climbing up the stairs and she's fighting with getting her shoes off, and generally yelling because sock removal ability has eluded her so far. I'm thinking the best option will be duct tape, for either the shoes, socks or her mouth, I'm not sure which and on which day. Kidding, sort of.
  • luckily not yet.  We take them off as soon as we are home though and as I walk through the door, she holds up her feet for me to take them off.

As an aside--when are you going to move her to forward face--Elle is still 19 pounds so we are waiting for that 1 pound of weight gain but her legs are long too and she is all chrunched up back there.

We're going to try to wait until 2 but I don't know.  She's getting awfully heavy to maneuver in rear facing!  She's also 27 lbs and 34 inches!  So.....she's big.   I do believe that it's safer so I'm trying to hold out as long as is practical.  She kind of hates being in there now anyway (it's the age) so I'm trying to not let things like that, or the throwing stuff (!) rush me.

  • I don't have any advice, but related: I am just now realizing that Nora needs to start wearing shoes. Someone gave her a cheap little pair of sneakers for her birthday that I had on her this weekend, but that is seriously the only pair she owns. Girlfriend has been going barefoot 24/7 since May.

GAH. Baby shoes are cute and all, but they cost a fortune. And they don't even keep them on?? I thought it would at least be easier to deal with than baby socks, but damn.

Evie just started wearing shoes last week (toddler room, needs them to go outside). And yes EXPENSIVE! We went to stride rite, but also have a pair of circo target ones. I still rarely put shoes on her when we go out, if she is just going in stroller or carrier, who cares. but once she starts walking we will have them whenever we are out!

  • Heather - do you have a Stride Rite outlet near you?  Or just check online for sales.

Jane wore Keen sandals a lot in the Summer plus some white sandals from Stride Rite.  That was it.  I got the Keens on Zulily and the Sandals were like $40?  They lasted all summer, getting soaked at daycare, etc.

She now has converse, a pair of Toms that are a little big :(, brown mary jane's from Stride Rite and a pair of softer shoes from Stride Rite that are her daycare "indoor" shoes.  I think the converse were like $20 online?  The Stride Rites were from the outlet and it was buy one get half off or something?

I dunno - haven't found them to be too bad.  Of course, I love to go look at the more expensive brands but I have to say I got her a pair of white See Kai Run sandals that were $$$ and we went to Stride Rite too and I got her some there that I liked better and could not have held up better.  They were far cheaper too.

  • Yeah, Natalie does this too.  And like Alex, she will scream SHOEEEE until I take them off of her while driving.  She also rips out any hair-do I've attempted, so when we get out of the car it's a routine of replacing shoes, putting the pony tail back in, and all that.  But she likes wearing shoes and tries to put them on in the house all the time.  I don't get it.

We buy mostly See Kai Run but I noticed that Stride Rite made a black Mary Jane style shoe for Target, so I bought them for a steal at $10, and I really like them a lot.  The shoes she keeps on the best are her Crocs -- I guess jibbitz with Disney characters make them more fun to wear.

  • Oh yeah, we have that problem too. I don't know how to stop it.

  • Logan does this and he faces forward. He gets the shoes and socks off as soon as his door is closed. We've even lost a few socks and shoes out the window! I've tried giving him little toys to play with as soon as I buckle him in thinking it would distract him from the socks/shoes, nope!!! Lincoln's following in Logan's footsteps. It makes going somewhere for a quick ride impossible, instead I spend 10 minutes just looking for the socks and shoes that were tossed off!

See, I think I just need a shift in perspective. $19 is crazy to me, when the shoes are so teeny! :) But yeah, now that I'm thinking of it--for something she's going to wear nearly every day for a while--not that crazy.

    Perspective.

  • Side note - do you remember those little shoe lace cover things as a kid? Little barrel like things that the shoe laces were stuffed into?

Nolan loves his (stride rite) shoes and brings them TO ME to put on. He's never once tried to take them off. So, I think it's all in the kid. Then again, he has never tried to take off socks either and a lot of people on here complain about that!

  • Jackson is obsessed with wearing shoes and rarely takes them off, in fact it's the first thing he wants to do when he gets up in the morning and it was basically his first word outside of mama and dada. I'm wondering if this is a phase though...

I would say when winter comes maybe with the additonal layers and things it'll just be naturally harder for her to get them off and once she realizes how cold her feet are she'll stop. Maybe. You just never know with these toddlers!!
