I just got a text from my neighbor asking if I heard the Helicopter last night (which I didn't, I was already sleeping).
According to an article there was a woman shot in her car last night, sometime between 9 and 10pm. The car was still running when she was found.
I live on a street off of Tamar in Columbia, the end of my street is not a good area, there are townhomes and appartments that are apparently the homes of a bunch of not so great people.
The part of the street that I am on is super nice. Opposite end of it, yet only a few hundred feet away from the bad part.
The woman was shot in the bad part but it seriously freaks me out. I moved to Columbia because it was supposed to be a good place to raise kids... might as well have moved to Baltimore and bough my house for half the price.
I really don't feel very safe here right now

Well, there are places in Baltimore that would be just as safe as your house in Columbia so that's an option.. We're looking at a few areas now within city limits and I would live there any day over Columbia, just personal preference.
I wouldn't worry though that this one isolated incident means you're not safe anymore. You never know the background, anyone can make enemies, even people in nicer areas, and those enemies might just have a few screws loose. It's not like it was random, it sounds like from the article online this am, that it was more targeted and that can be anywhere you go.
On the positive side maybe this will bring more attention to that area and crime will decrease. I can understand your worry but I think you're still in a safe area if that helps at all, lots of people find Columbia a highly desirable area.
meh - crime happens everywhere.
There are some apartments near my house that are pretty shady, but most of the problems stay there.
Yeah I know. I did not realize how bad that end of the street was when we moved it.
Luckily we don't see any of it on our end but just knowing that this is all so close is making me uneasy. And now that someone was actually murdered it REALLY makes me uneasy
Wow, what a statement. Every area has crime regardless to how much the houses cost. People who make generalizations such as this really pi$$ me off. Pure ignorance.
Perhaps before purchasing your current house, you should have looked at the statistics of the entire street.
I am sorry you feel offended by this. It is I think general understanding that Baltimore has a very high crime rate and homes are cheaper in that area.
Columbia is know to be a mainly well maintained area, great for families.
I realize there are good and bad areas everywhere but you do pay in Columbia for the location.
So based on that I think it is not unfair to say I might as well have bought in Baltimore for a cheaper price, we were blinded enough to pay the money here.
There are really nice sections of Baltimore too and some so so areas and some seriously shady/dangerous areas.
Columbia, overall, has a great reputation, but there are shady dangerous areas there too - and not just one or two. If you looked at the crime rates for my zip code, they are pretty high, however like 90% of that crime is affiliated w/ 2 apartment complexes. the rest of the neighborhoods have normal/little crime. We paid less for our Columbia house b/c of its proximity to bad areas. If we wanted to pay $50-100K more, we probably could have gotten farther away from any crime, but we couldn't afford it.
i heard that too.
