Breastfeeding and Food to Avoid?

So, I posted on my FB wall about suggested frozen meals. I'm trying to cook double and freezing a lot to stock up my freezer. So far I've gotten some good suggestions, however...

My Mom mentioned that tomato sauces are a 'no-no' when breastfeeding, also saying Mexican would be a possible one?

What do you know about this, or general things to avoid when breastfeeding? I'm going to do some research, but hopefully I can figure it out before I make much. So far I've made home-made spaghetti sauce and Mexican style Goulash...both with tomato sauces....

Re: Breastfeeding and Food to Avoid?

  • I ate everything and anything while breastfeeding and I strongly believe that's a good route to take. Tomatoes or other acidic fruits and veggies will not effect breastmilk or change the acidity of it.

Kellymom.com has a great article on this topic: http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html

  • I don't think it's an "in-general" rule so much as it's specific to your child. It makes some babies very gassy/upset stomachs.

ETA: I don't believe that it doesn't effect BM because I "tested" the theory when N was little and it definitely made a difference. But like I said, they're all different!

  • I ate a huge variety of foods while breastfeeding, and the only foods I noticed an issue with were overly spicy foods (I like stuff *really* hot), and onions-- onions were really bad.  She would refuse the breast any time I ate them.  Other than that, Mexican food and tomatoes and the like never were an issue.

  • I've eaten everything, as well, and although there probably was/is a slight difference in my breastmilk, Sawyer has never seemed to mind since day one.  I kind of took the approach that I would start with eating it all, and cool it on problematic foods as they because an issue (and they never did).

  • When she was really little we had some issues with gassy foods (cabbage and broccoli). I started eating everything and cut out if needed. We also had some sensitivities to dairy, but eventually grew out of that.
  • I also watned to say I have a lot of freezer stuff on pinterest. And martha stewart has some great freezer stuff that I have tried.

  • I didn't change my diet while breastfeeding (of course, I would have if needed but we didn't have issues).

I have a ton of freezer meals made and have several pasta  dishes and mexican dishes and I don't think they'll be an issue.

  • I ate whatever I wanted and would just cut out things that I recognized bothered them. We had no issues!!

This. We had a few fussy/gassy periods with Nora when she was like 2-4 months old, but I could never totally pinpoint exactly what was causing it. It wasn't ever REALLY bad, so I never actually made any adjustments to my diet.

  • Thanks for the feedback ladies, I won't worry about it too much yet. I'll try to have some variety in the freezer in case something does become a problem, but hopefully it won't.
