Organizing the Pantry

I really need to get our pantry organized but I don't know where to start. I've been browsing The Container Store's website this afternoon to look for products to help and I'm feeling slightly overwhelmed.

How is your pantry organized? Pics would be fabulous! I need some inspiration.

Re: Organizing the Pantry

  • Definitely start by sorting by category. Then see what needs to be in containers/bins.

On the left wall I have fancy baking stuff in a bin on top (for decorating cakes mostly). 2nd shelf is canned goods. Fruit in one section, then canned beans, spaghettios, canned tomato products, can tuna and chicken, etc. Next shelf has hurricane supplies and cook books.

On the back wall, chips, crackers, cake mixes. 2nd canisters with flour, sugar, cornmeal, grits. 3rd starts with spillover from the left wall (the shelf is U-shaped) with extra tomato products, then a bin with regular baking stuff - brown sugar, powedered sugar, jello, corn starch all live in there, and another bin kind of in the corner with vinegars, syrups and honey.  3rd shelf has extras of peanut butter, a hanging bin with cloth napkins, a bin for dried fruits, nuts, and flax, and another bin of extras where I put smaller stuff like unopened salad dressing, soy sauce, and random packets.

Right wall has unopened cereal on top, along with my way-too-huge lunch box collection. Next is lesser used, odd-sized tupperware in the corner and kiddie snack stuff like my stash of nutella and magic pop.  3rd shelf has oatmeal and cereals and 2 more bins - one with pasta and one with grains.

I have a big recycling bin in the middle of this pantry, so it blocks off a lot of the floor space, but garbage bags and a gallon jug of vinegar live down there.

  • Do you have a Pinterest account?  If so, search for Pantry - there are some really good ones I've re-pinned.  :)

  • We arrange according to the item, but we also have small wooden baskets where I group together all the pantry items for a certain meal. I have six baskets, so at any given time I can send my hubby to get a basket and I don't have to dig around for what I need when we are short on time. I sort as soon as we get home from the store, so it only takes me about ten extra minutes but saves a ton of time during the week.
  • We move into a new house this weekend with a GIANT pantry that I am way too excited about so i've been googling this for a month. As a pp said, check out pinterest. It's a great site and I've also been posting there and saving ideas. I would start by making sure you have things like baskets and bins for small things, airtight containers instead of bags for things like rice, flower, etc (I've bought a few of the OXO ones already in prep for my new fancy pantry). I also saw on pinterest a pic of someone using a magazine holder for cans of soup. GENIUS!

OH, and I'm painting the inside of my pantry for fun :)
