Even though I'm not pregnant yet, DH and I got into a random conversation about baby names since we are currently TTC.
At the top of our list is Catherine/ Katherine, either as a first or a mn, because I really love it. The spelling with a "C" happens to be a family name on his side (his great grandma's name and his sister's middle name). However, I prefer the Katherine spelling.
I thought perhaps I could justify the use of the K by saying it will honor the two of us-- the name itself for SIL, and the "K" initial for me-- since Natalie is not named after anyone.
What do you ladies think?

Re: Baby names-- is this ok?
I think you could justify it any way you'd like--and your reasoning sounds good to me.
My middle name is Kathryn, after my father's mother, Katherine. My mom altered the spelling because she felt like Katherine was too long for a middle name (whatever, Mom).
She just liked Heather Kathryn better than Heather Katherine for whatever reason, and no one in my family ever seemed to care. They still say I was named after my grandmother!

I love when people spell Kathryn this way!
And I agree with Heather; who says you have to justify the name at all? You like what you like! We have decided that Baby # 2's middle name will be James. Just because we both like the name, and it goes well with the first name. Someone said, oh, is it James after your brother? (my little brother's name is James) And I said well I guess it could be, but really....we just like the name!
Thanks! This was really helpful and exactly what I was wondering. I think Kathryn is equally beautiful, too.
Jill-- my ILs are a really serious about naming traditions (my husband is the 8th Walter in a row) so it's nice to have semi-sound reasoning because they *will* question me about it if I go that route. Of course just liking it should theoretically be good enough for them, but I don't think it would be. And they're the type of people where you'd hear about it forever.
Agreed! I feel like we over think these things sometimes

I love it
I intend to use the name Katherine as a mn for our kids after my mom.
So, if you have a son, will it automatically be a Walter? And if so, how do you feel about that?
We're not sure yet, although we are leaning toward yes. However, each Walter has a different middle name, and DH and I have decided that if we have a son, he will go by his middle name that we select together. If we don't use Walter as the first name, it will be the middle name. Because there is flexibility in the matter, I am not bothered by it. It's really important to me to respect DH's wishes about it.
I also agree with your justification for spelling it with a K.
On another note, it's projected to be a very popular name in 2011 due to the Royal Wedding and the popularity of the Duchess.
We are considering using Catherine as a middle name for our next (should it be a girl), because we like the first name Quinn and not a lot of middle names sound good with it and I always wanted to give my daughter my middle name, which is Kate. IMO Kate does not work with Quinn so I figured Catherine would be a good alternative. Still undecided on the spelling as well, but mine's with a K so it makes sense to use the K spelling for us too I think.
I love it with a K!
It's also one of our girl mn's if we have a girl in the future.
Just don't do this... last year I had a student named Katherine and she went by Cate. Don't ask me why, but it was so confusing!

Isn't Kate Middleton actually Catherine? I agree that's confusing. Pick a C or a K and stick with it.
