  • 1. Not if there were other factors.   I'd possibly even take a pay cut if it was closer to home, better hours/responsibilities, etc.  If it was just a lateral move I'd probably require some amount of raise to make it worth the "starting over" but I have no clue what that would be.  Maybe 10%?

    3. I dont have a lot of places to compare to so it would be based on my current employer...  if it wasnt a management or higher role, i'd think 3 weeks.  if it was a management role, i'd expect 4.

    I'm a SAHM so I can't answer 1) but I'll answer the next 2.

    3) What kind of vacation time would you expect someone with 12 years of career experience to have?   In my experience, vacation time is linked to time with the company, not career experience.    In general, I'd expect at least 1 week of vacation time after 1 yr of service, which then increases as you have spent more time with the company.  DH has been with his company 10 years and has 3 wks paid vacation, if he were salaried/manager, I think he would have 4 wks.

  • 1) Is there certain % of salary increase you'd require to change jobs?  It would depend on how happy I am at my current job.  I'm pretty happy here, so salary + benefits would have to be really high.  I took a pay cut to leave a job a few years ago because it was going to make me miserable to stay there.

    Depends on if I had to go into an office or not.  If I did, then yes, I'd be asking for a significant raise.

    I obviously have not been in the type of jobs any of you have because I've never seen a company start out giving you more than a 1 wk or so of vacation starting with the company.

    Every place I have worked since college starts at 2 weeks paid vacation that begins accruing immediately.  They have also bumped to 3 weeks after 5 years of service.  At my last job, I had just started earning 3 weeks and I was laid off/moved to my current place.  I am 3.75 years into this one. I have no desire to start my "5 year count" over again, so I am going to say I need 3 weeks. 

    I cannot imagine only getting a week a year.  All of that would immediately be blown on sick time with the kids.  :(

    Are you voluntarily interviewing or did they seek you out.  My answers change based on this information but not much.

    3) What kind of vacation time would you expect someone with 12 years of career experience to have? Depends - are we talking vacation or PTO? What is the company's sick policy? Vacation - I would expect to be offered 2-3 weeks, but would try to negotiate for more. PTO - I would expect 3-4 weeks. My company (50k employees) offers 2 weeks vacation to all employees, regardless of years of experience. However, they don't track sick time for salaried employees (ie, I don't have to "take time off" for dr's appointments, staying home sick with Helen, etc. which is REALLY nice).

    One of my previous jobs didn't give you any vacation/sick until 1 year.  If you were off, you were off without pay.  That is still their policy.

    I would expect what you posted.  The last two jobs I've been with give you 2 weeks initially.  It doesn't matter how many total years - just your tenure with THAT company.

    But I also think all industries and the actual position will have different circumstances.

    Also - no to the peep toe shoes.  Also, I was willing to leave my last postion for a paycut depending on other benefits.

  • 1.  Depends on the job and your current situation.  I'd take a little less pay for better hours and more vacation

    3.  I'd expect 3 weeks minmum.  If they don't offer sick time or personal days, I'd expect 4.  DH has 14 years and he get 4 weeks, 3 personal days, and sick days.  He also got 2 weeks of paternity leave.  However, he puts in long hours and works he behind off...

     

  • I work for a local governmental entity and we are on 6 months probation, so you don't have any sick or vacation time. After 6 months, you have some sick time and then after you a year, you have 2 weeks paid vacation.

  • 1.  Depends on if I am currently miserable or if I am just looking for a change.  I would look for approx. 10% or higher increase if I was currently ok in my position.  If I was miserable and just wanted to get out, I would be fine with a lateral, or if it was closer to home and less hours (as in, no overtime), maybe even something with a small paycut.

    2.  I would say no - just to be on the conservative side.

    3.  Usually you can negotiate with companies who have a set amount of weeks if you have more experience, or are used to more vacation at a previous job.  It also depends on if the company does PTO or vacation and sick.  I have 22 days of PTO with 9 years experience (but I started getting 22 days at 5 years experience.  We start out at 17 days).  Since this is PTO - i can use it for anything (either all vacation, if I wanted, or if I am sick, it also counts against the PTO, so it could be good or bad.)  It depends on the industry you are in, but I would expect anywhere from 3-5 weeks of PTO and/or vacation and sick time for 12 years (depending on type of job, industry, etc)

    Ditto! I would NEVER accept that now, but I really wanted the job back then. Not sure what I was thinking. That PTO policy was indicative of the fact that the company didn't care a bit about its employees, and it was not at all family-friendly.

  • My current company offers 2 weeks paid vacation (both salaried and hourly); 11 paid holidays and 5 sick days, but if you are sick more than that and not just being a douche and taking a day off every week, they let it slide.


     

  • 1. It would depend on why I was leaving my current job. If the reason wasn't related to money, it wouldn't matter, and I might take a pay cut. When I left my firm to go in house, I took a 30% pay cut, and didn't get back to that salary (without factoring bonus and stock options) for 6 years (bonus and stock options and quality of life made up for the pay cut). When I switched from one company to another, and the jobs were pretty much the same, I would not have left for less than a 10% raise. Ended up with more than 15%.

    2. If I had a nice, normal colored pedicure, and the shoes went better with my outfit than any others, yes.

    3. 4 weeks. My companies both had policies that if you had at least 10 years' experience, you got 4 weeks right away. You still have to be with the company for 10 more to get 5 weeks. I heard that a lot of companies are only offering 2 no matter how much experience you have. I think that is dumb.

    3) What kind of vacation time would you expect someone with 12 years of career experience to have? If I could negotiate an extra week or two, that would be great. But I'd expect no more than 2 weeks. Every company I've worked for was set on giving new employees, regardless of position, 2 yrs vacay.


  • 10% pay increase including bonus potential overall, with comparable benefits.  More if the benefits aren't as great; less if they are.  I have an amazing boss and a pretty sweet work/life balance (and cadillac benefits) so it'd have to be a pretty great job and a 10% increase to make me move.

    Peep toe shoes - not in health care or financial services, but a small peep might be ok in other industries. Peep toe is frowned upon at my company by some folks so I'd err on the side of caution and go with a classic "current" pump.

    In the last 14 years of my career, I have not worked for an employer who negotiates on PTO/Vacation time.  So that would be part of my consideration in benefits.  I get about 5 weeks right now and we have the ability to sell it - I am selling 120 hours this week which is paying for our Disneyworld trip and paid off my credit cards which I am trying to keep at zero balance.
