Fall makes me homesick

I hate the fall in Georgia. It is so pathetic and non-existent. Back home in MD the temps are in the 70's-low 80's and the leaves are starting to turn. Here it's still in the 90's with no sign of change in sight. There will be no leaves changing, they just turn crispy brown and fall off the trees. AND to top it all off, there is no canned pumpkin anywhere to be found, so I can't make my traditional fall nummies :(

Re: Fall makes me homesick

  • Yes, ITA.  I relished in those few days after Irene came through and it was only in the 70s outside.  We're going up to Buffalo/Rochester at the end of the month though, so I'm hoping to catch a little bit of fall while we're there even thought it will still be a little early for that.

It's getting cooler at night though and I've been opening the windows after dark and burning and apple scented candle - that makes it feel a little bit like fall for me.

No canned pumpkin!? Uh-oh!  I have one can left from last year, I'll have to start keeping my eyes peeled at the supermarket.

  • I've only just started to love fall over the past couple years, but I can't imagine not having a standard new england fall.

I like Panda's idea of burning candles.

    sorry Confused

    I also like Panda's idea.

  • Panda, maybe a trip to yankee candle is in store for me, that may help bring on the smells of fall at least. And thankfully it's been cooler in the mornings! I actually sat outside on my porch swing today and read for class before it got into the 80's lol. I don't know what it is about fall that just makes me miss being near my family so much...

No no no, Yankees Candle's fall line is nasty this year, I swear most of them smell like men's deodorant and I had to make some returns.

I highly suggest "Autumn Apple" by Slatkin, thats what I'm using and it's so fresh and orchard-y.

I cannot imagine a non-white Christmas, but that's what we're getting this year!  And we're hosting for the first time ever... in our tiny apartment... *gulp*

Thanks for the heads-up. Smelling lots of candles gives me a headache so it's nice to have some suggestions

  • this might be a stupid question...but, do they sell pumpkins down there?

what type of fall stuff you do guys have? hayrides? cider? corn mazes?

I always forget that what it's like here isn't always how it is all over the place.

  • They do sell pumpkins, but it's at the grocery store. I haven't found a pumpkin patch yet and it bums me out. They also sell these obnoxious cinnamon brooms right at the doorway of the grocery store and they're so overpowering that it completely turns me off from grocery shopping. I buy apple cider like mad this time of year but its the kind in a jug that a national supplier has, not really anything local. I'm so jealous of New England this time of year. I almost went to UMass for my grad degree and every fall I kick myself (but get over it really quickly in the winter) lol
  • haha, i hear ya,

Once I can smell winter, I get really excited, but once christmas is over, it's literally like hell.

I'm actually going to check with my therapist about seasonal affective disorder...my winters/early springs get that bad.

... only a lot colder.  lol

They sell those cinnamon brooms up north, too.  They're just way too strong.

I saw pumpkins at Michaels- they they were some sort of coated foam that you could carve a jack-o-lantern in.  They were kinda realistic looking, but I was like - why would you choose this over the real deal!  This is my first fall down here, I'm really hoping I can find something fall-ish to do around Halloween.

  • I could never live somewhere that doesn't get fall, I love it too much!

I just bought mini candles at Bath & Body Works last night - 3 for $5 - which is awesome because I wanted to try a couple new scents. Candles are such an easy way to set a seasonal mood!

Also, breaking out the crock pot and filling the house with yummy smells helps.

I hear ya on the brooms, those things are awful. They have them at a LOT of stores up here.

Let me know if you can't find any pumpkin, I wouldn't mind boxing some up and sending to you.
