I'm sure most of you are aware of the terrible drought and resulting famine in Somalia. If not, or if you want to read a first hand account, please read this link:

and, if you are so moved, please help me out. My friend from my Habitat for Humanity days works with Cassandra (link's author) at Mercy Corps. I know Mercy Corps to be a legit and powerful organization. There are so many problems in the world, and it is easy to feel powerless. Let's do something small, but potentially life-saving for a child (or many) in the Horn.
Next week, let's have a families night out.
I was thinking we could all meet at the Grand Coney on MI for dinner, and then donate the difference of what you may have spent at a more expensive restaurant.
Then we could send our group donation to Mercy Corps.
Thoughts?
Re: How we can help: Horn of Africa crisis
I like the coffee idea but that is because I'm craving it right now. Like the good stuff. I'm out of town/tied up all next week though. Anyone want to meet me in Philly?
Yeah... I'll bet, Wendy. I still haven't read your trip account. I think I'm worried I won't be able to mentally handle it right now.
That's OK. Actually the Rwanda day is probably the only gut-wrenching post. Good for you for organizing something around the horn of Africa though - it gets forgotten so easily in the media
All right, I'll get to it and skip Rwanda until I have a little more emotional muscle - how's that for a metaphor for all of America overlooking this tragedy because it hurts too much?
And, I'm sorry for not thinking of you and your org when I had this idea. Totally slipped my mind that we have our own expert right here.
That's totally OK - all of our work is done through local (indigenous) partners. Many times relief organizations end up pooling our money anyway, believe it or not. At least in Somalia, since it's really hard to get in there. Whoever has reliable access is sort of in charge. So especially for relief efforts the important thing is to just get involved, it's not so important which organization.(As long as it's a reputable one . . . and I'm pretty sure MercyCorps is!)
Depending on when, I'm in.
Rin-Rin wanted to join in a nestie GNO, so if anyone has her contact info, I'm sure she'd like to know. She works at our Pedi office, and she was our nurse when we went for Renee's two week appt. She misses all of us, but is super busy and hasn't had a chance to stop by. She's doing well :-)
