What should I know before hiring a cleaning person?

Would you all hire someone to clean your house that you found on Craigslist?  I'm obviously going to do an interview first, but I'm assuming it would be cheaper to hire someone that has their own business vs. Merry Maids, etc.  We don't have a ton of expensive items that someone would want to steal.  However, if we did get stolen from, would that be covered under our homeowners insurance or would we have to go after the individual?  Anything else I should know before hiring someone or questions to ask?  TIA!

  • I would not hire anyone unless they had there own insurance. We had an incident a few years ago and our cleaning person accidently broke our shower door. The cleaning company paid for a new one. There is more than just theft that you have to take into consideration.

    Ask them if they will buy bring their own cleaning supplies or if they will use your supplies. I always have them use my supplies because I want natural or low chemical cleaning products and I want them to use my floor and hand steamer for cleaning.

    Obvious ask what will be included in the cleaning. Will they do a basic, deep clean, etc?

    Ditto to all! H and I are insurance agents and I would have a major problem hiring anyone who didn't have proper insurance coverage. Your homeowners insurance should cover anything that is damaged or stolen but that shouldn't be YOUR problem. Plus if you have to file a claim your rates may go up, not fair to you, and if the item or damage is less than your deductible you are going to be paying out of pocket anyway.

    Check with your ins agent and make sure you know what your deductible is and also what your coverage is (liability, property, and med pay). Typically your standard policy only covers a certain amount for items like fine art, jewelry, fire arms, etc, so if you have $5,000 of jewelry stolen, your policy may not cover the full value of the item(s) stolen. Just worth mentioning if you're thinking about bringing a stranger into your home :) Sorry for the insurance talk.... boring, I know!

    I'd definitely ask for recommendations from their past clients and find out if they are experienced and good at what they do.

    Depends on the size of your home and frequency (agencies especially tend to discount the more often they come - trying to entice you to have weekly service). I had a home in Reno before we moved back to San Diego - it was $65 for every other week, about 1800 square feet. We just have a cat and no kids, so not a lot of mess. I assume it may vary depending on your area but I'd call around and compare.

    Thanks. I hadn't even thought about this, but it might be something I'll splurge on. We've got two dogs, and a 1600 square foot house, no kids either. I'm a busy grad student, and DH is deployed, so cleaning right now isn't one of my first priorities.

    Do not go with a service like Merry Maids, you will pay more for much less. When we lived in our one-bedroom apartment with a den, we paid the same amount of money for a crappy cleaning as my FI's mom did for someone to clean their 5 bedroom house and do a thorough deep cleaning every 2 weeks. 

  • I've never used one, but inquired about one before.  Just a few questions that came to mind -

    • If they're comfortable/used to being around animals
    • The hours they work (some just work M-F, so if you want to be home when they clean & work FT, that would arise a conflict)
    • If they have their own insurance & if so, what it covers
    • How they charge - i.e. by the square footage or per hour (just incase you want to save $ and just have the 'most used' areas of your home cleaned instead of whole home)
    • What all is entailed with their service - i.e. windows, dusting, floors, etc
    • Do they give a discounted rate if they come more often to maintain home
    • If you buy your own cleaning products for them to use, will they deduct cost of service
    • If you aren't satisfied w/service, do they issue refunds
    • Go over any "off limits" or private areas in your home that you'd rather not have them touch
    • If there's anything that they want/need you to do prior to their service such as put away shoes, clothes, organize, etc or if they will just move those items

    I used to babysit for a couple that used Merry Maids and they were all young girls (16 yrs-ish?) and if I wasn't there watching the kids, the mom wouldn't have known all the areas that they 'overlooked' because w/her 3 kids, things got messy again really fast!

  • Read the book Nickel and Dimed for an inside look at how companies like Merry Maids short change their workers. Hiring directly puts more money into the hands of the person who is actually doing the work. An individual can also do things more to your satisfaction.  I don't know about you, but one bucket of water for my whole house isn't going to get anything very clean!
