Baby Name Poll

So H and I are those people who have names picked out way before we even want kids.....but H and I were having a "discussion" about names this weekend and I just wanted to take a poll here.

Both of our names start with M....and H decided long ago that if he has a boy, he wants him to be a junior because H is the last living male with his name...so our boy would also have a M name. I also always loved the name Mia, which would make it another M name, so we figured if we had more than two (assuming we have boy and girl) we would have to continue with M names...because the third would be left out, etc etc.

Anyway, I really love the name Mia, but technically I want the name Amelia and just have her go by Mia. H hates the name Amelia and says it's not an M name....which it's not, but if she was always called Mia? .....

So here's a poll. Tell me your opinion.

Also, feel free to discuss your fave baby names below.

Re: Baby Name Poll

  • What if you name her Amelia, but she hates Mia when she gets older?

    well I love both names...so I wouldn't really mind.

But, I can see your point.

  • I'm in the camp that you should name your child what you plan to call them.

  • When I was pregnant, we knew we were going to name our son Tillman Mathew (Tillman after my grandfather, and Mathew because it's my husband's middle name).  I thought since Tillman is unusual that we would call him by his middle name, but we never did...not ever.  I told people we were going to and everything, but it just never happened.  Because of my experience, I say name the baby what you want to call it.

  • first, this post is kinda funny. but anyway, my sister's name is mia and i love the name. if it wasn't hers, i'd def name my kids mia. that said, i also love amelia. you should name her the longer name so she can have a nickname.. i'm sorta biased because since my name is so short, there is no nicknames possible. :(

yah....the board felt dead...so I felt like posting a random post....but it doesn't seem to be getting much action.  and if you just mean that H and I are weird, I agree. Wink

And.......I also LOVE Amelia.....just something about it. I think because its not so popular...

  • I like both names.  But, if you plan to call her Mia and you have an M theme going on, I'd just go w/ Mia.  Plus, it's one thing to go by Jenn when your name is Jennifer -- it's obviously a shorter version.  But, a middle name or Mia isn't so obvious and it can be weird if everyone knows her as Mia but at school and the Dr., etc., they say "Amelia" people will be like, "huh, who?"

  • I don't really like the name Amelia, but that's just me. I prefer more French versions like Amelie :) But if you PLAN on calling her Mia, just name her Mia. (However, be aware that can be pronounced both Mee-ya and My-yah, and she will spend her life correcting 50% of people who will guess the wrong one.)

Turns out both H and I LOVE a lot of A names, but with our married last name starting with an A, I refuse to make our poor child alliterative or AA. SoI have to wave bye-bye to Amelie, Anya, Anastasia, and Ana. (I really like the short soft a sound!) I like Aiden and Avery, but those are too common now days.

Anyone who pronounces Mia My-yaa is an idiot, IMHO.

I'm a call you Genie. :) Nicknames don't have to exact pieces of the longer name! Goodness, in my years, my nicknames have been from a normal "Krys" to "K2O" to "Tank Girl" to "Poptart"

  • Like sarack? I hated having a short name. I'd rather have been named something longer and shorten it myself. I think Amelia to Mia works nicely and it gives her more options as she gets older?

no, i don't think you're weird at all. i think it's funny because you're NTTC right? lol. but also because i can't get H to tell me any names he likes. i still really like amelia. i say just name her that.
