My husband and I are moving up to NOVA area (yay for both having jobs/being done with school) really soon and are looking for rentals. We're looking for 2 bedroom in maybe the Great Falls area preferably around $1600 but are comfortable up to $1800 (we could do more but want to save as much as possible to buy a house in a few years). Are we crazy, or is this a doable budget?

    I don't know that there are many rentals in Great Falls.  It's mostly HUGE houses.  Even $1800 is going to be pushing it for 2 bedroom in the close-in suburbs.  Further out, it's definitely doable.  I don't really know any specifics about renting in the Great Falls area.  Hopefully someone else will chime in on that.

    The PP is right - Great Falls is mainly large, very expensive single family homes, many of which are probably not for rent, but would probably be very expensive if for rent. I would recommend looking in the Potomac Falls area (Sterling) or Reston if you want to be near Great Falls - there are plenty of apartments in these areas, and you may be able to find something in your budget if you do some research. Good luck!

    Where will you be working? Any reason you want to be in Great Falls? Do you need to be close to metro?

    Hello and welcome. I am relatively new here too. My husband and I moved to the area in June. We struggled to find an apartment within your listed budget when we looked in VA. We are in Oxon Hill, MD where we have a great apartment for 1225 a month including utilities. The building is old and kind of ugly, but the apartments are renovated and very nice. The management is fantastic. If you can live further out, you may try an option like this.

    Why Great Falls? I don't know if that's the perfect fit for two young people without a family -- it's mostly large single-family homes, not near Metro, and mostly residential (not a lot of places to go out). Are you going to be working near there? Tysons Corner might be a better place to look for apartments in that geographical area.

    You can probably find apartments in that budget out in Ashburn, or Sterling. Depending on where you jobs are, that might work for you.

    Thanks all. I re-read my post, and realized I meant to put Falls Church. After staring at a computer screen trying to find something, the names of areas blur together. (We're moving from FL, so still trying to figure out where everything is)  We're both going to be working in VA, my husband will be working in Falls Church and I'm going to be around Tyson's Corner.
