WTH is with all the ants?!

We've had the exterminator out twice and they are back again!!

Is it because of the lack of rain?!

Me too. I'm armed with a paper towel and a bottle of Clorox Cleanup almost every minute I'm awake. Freaks me out.

    yep.

luckily we haven't had any at home. i had an infestation in my office though - had to buy a ton of ant baits and spray a ton to get rid of them.

  • I've just come to think of August/September as "ant season". It was worse for us last year, not sure why...I was expecting a full brigade of water-seeking insects.

  • It was horrible for us, also despite Terminix treatments and cleaning/sweeping/vacuuming multiple times a day.  I was beginning to feel like maybe we were just slobs.  DH ended up crawling around the floor and found several ant trails leading to cracks in the base boards.  He caulked them to block their way, and then as a safeguard we bought this stuff called "Terro" liquid ant killer from Home Depot.  He laid it out in front of the cracks and near our front and back door frames.  The ants bring it back to their colony and it kills them.  Honestly, they were gone in a matter of days.  I can't believe how well it worked.

That was about 2 weeks ago and we haven't had them back since.

  • we have never had our home exterminated.  when the ants come in from time to time, i set out the little baits and they seem to take care of the problem (there's no telling if we have the same kinds of ants).

  • We can't seem to get them under control either!
  • We've had them in our upstairs masterbath...that's it...which I find is weird.  We put out baits and that helped for a little while.  When they came back, I sprayed Raid (a lot) where they were coming from.  That has held them since.

Is it safe for pets and crawling babies though?

  • I agree with the Terro stuff.  Ours come in the outlets near the kitchen sink.  They say to just put them out by the point of entry.

We put it on the outside of the door frame near the bottom hinge so the cats couldn't get to it.  We did put it in one area inside the house, but then blocked it with a dresser and shoved old pillows under the points of entry so they couldn't get to it.  It worked well.

Our kids are now old enough to know not to touch it, but using the above tactic should help avoid issues with a crawling baby as well.  We don't have dogs, so I can't comment on that.

  • Also, it's made from Borax so it's pretty safe to begin with....

  • I had the best luck with mixing borax with sugar and water to make a paste on a paper plate. I guess it's very similar to the terro, but I happened to have a box on hand. They SWARMED the plate and I haven't seen them since.

  • I came home for lunch today and i had probably a dozen ants on a dish towel. I looked all over the kitchen and didnt find any more. I had my H spray anyways. I might have to try that borax mixture. I have a huge box of it on hand since I make my own laundry detergent.

It's the exact same.  I don't ever use borax, so I just buy the Terro liquid.  I put it in the caps from water bottles or put drops directly on my counters and window sills.

  • they are so gross! We've gotten them a few times this summer also. My exterminator confirmed ours are just sugar ants though and the traps have been working nicely.

  • It's such a pain!  We are only getting a few a day but have checked the exterior and interior and see no point of entry.  Also we're getting fire ants...nto sure if that's the same for everyone else?  I've heard of a lot more sugar ant sightings.
