Still trying to understand Pinterest.

Is the point to find sites you like or just images?  I'm trying to find some boards to follow, but it's just pics.  Like, for the Travel category, why would I want to just see a picture of a Scottish castle with no info about where it is/tourist details/etc.

I think I'm just missing the point. or rather, I get the point but it isn't what I need.  I can see how it would be PERFECT for wedding planning (oh, the olden days with our little bios).  But for anything that isn't soley represented by a picture, I don't get it.  I was sort of hoping it would help me find interesting websites.

Re: Still trying to understand Pinterest.

  • I don't really get the point of using it for travel, but I do use it for quilts, crafts and recipes. But those are all things that I can use the picture to reference the tutorial.

  • Its also great for decorating a house :-)  I've found some random blogs I like by clicking on different DiY items and different photos I liked.

But for planning a trip, no it wouldn't be great, but it could be used to save links for everything (say hotels, or sites to visit). But I think yelp would be the best bet for researching a trip.

  • I think it depends on what you're looking for. I use it for decor ideas, recipes, kid's activities/crafts, and shopping. All that stuff is pretty visual, and then when you click through the pictures it should take you to a link with the info. Travel stuff isn't so great, I agree--a lot of times it's just a random picture that's not linked to anything helpful.

And agreed re: wedding planning! I'm kind of sad this wasn't around then . . .

I'm not actually researching a trip, just compiling ideas.  Like, when I Stumble and come across a great site with, say, tips for travelling to China, I had been bookmarking it in Google.  I moved my bookmarks to Pinterest.

I guess it really just is for finding visual things.  Most sites I find have some picture I can pin so I can use it.  I guess I was hoping it was like a visual Delicious, or a more selective Sumble.

  • It's like bookmarking with pictures. I think you could use it for travel if you want to bookmark a cool hotel or a castle or a national park or something. But if you're bookmarking something that's mostly text, it's not any better than any other bookmarking site.

These are exactly the things I use mine for too.

I'm going to try out a makeup tutorial I found there tonight, I'm slightly scared, but I'll have makeup remover at the ready, so why the heck not.

  • For travel stuff, I have not used it so much for pinning other people's ideas, but creating my own board. So, for example, I read about a beach in CA that is entirely made of sea glass. I Googled that, and found a good blog post about it with good images. So, I pinned that to my West Coast travel board.

If I was looking at other people's ideas, I'd probably open their pin in a new tab and make sure the pin linked to something useful before pinning to my own boards.
