So, sailboating - sounds fun, right?
Not with 15 foot waves, 50 degree weather and crazy high wind it's not. For over 8 hours.
I was absolutely soaked from head to toe all day, my fingers were wrinkly all day, I was so exhausted 2 hours into it I was falling asleep sitting up, and I got sea sick and puked/dry heaved several times, I was shivering so bad I'm pretty sure it turned into convulsions. That boat was damn near at a 90 degree angle several times; I was pretty sure we were going to capsize and I had my how-not-to-drown escape route planned in my head.
If I never even SEE a boat again for the rest of my life I will be happy. It was, without a doubt, the worst day of my entire life. Unless I'm crazy enough to give birth one day. Is it possible birth is worse than 8 hours of this torturous hell?
I was so tired I sent to bed at 9:30 p.m. which of course means I got up at 4 a.m. And my legs are so sore.
But it's comforting to know that the worst day ever is behind me, not ahead.
Re: Worst day of my entire life
I am so sorry your first (now only time) was so bad.
Sailing can be fun, really. If it makes you feel any better the boat was probably never at more than a 30 degree heel. But I will warn you, as the day goes on and tomorrow, you'll probably find it painful to sit down. Your bottom was pounding on hard fiberglass for 8 hours. The bruises will start to show up too. If you were hiking at all (sitting with your legs over the side of the boat) you may also find the bruises along the back of your thighs. The best remedy for all of the above is booze and a pint of ice cream. Not to make light of your misery, because we do understand, but what you described above is pretty much what H did for a living and what I do for "fun" as a hobby. Imagine the day you had, for 6 days straight sleeping four hours on and four off.
Yeah, we often ask who needs more help, the sailors or the ones that love them. We know we aren't right in the head.
I would throw myself overboard, for reals.
I knew going into it the weather would be ***. It was nooooot good weather at all. I just didn't expect it to suck so bad, and take so very, very long.
I do have some pretty sweet knee bruises to show for it, though. They were sustained from crawling to the side of the boat to puke.
Seriously, how do you do this? Enjoy this? I can imagine in nice weather it would be tolerable but my experience has colored my overall perception of sailing. I would rather die than get on one ever again! My hat is off to you.
That sounds like my nightmare. Sailing+puking=worse experience than going to helll, I'm sure.
I hate sailing, and I've only ever done it on lakes.
Stick to nautical inspired clothes and keep away from the actual boats.
Oh the irony - I love it!
Up early for work, I see. Yay!
Well going through the bad days, you know you'll eventually have days like this that make it worthwhile and make you forget the bad days.
After trip I would swear it was my last one. Been there, had the T-Shirt type deal. Within a month I would be calling my Capt asking when we were leaving again. It's a sickness. We accept it.
As for the bruises...I did a regatta and had my annual OB appt the next day. The bruises (internal and external) were so bad, he was going to call social services. It took quite a bit to convince him that no, I did this to myself, for fun, for free.
If you ever make it down to OZ, we'll arrange a nice leisurely sailing trip for you. Up where we are, the prevailing winds rarely get over 10-15 knots.
ETA: BTW, yes, your day could have been worse. It could have been pouring rain with thunder and lightning.

Today it is beautiful out. I'm sure the waves are a fraction of what they were yesterday. Damn you, mother nature!
It's really a miracle it wasn't raining. It was overcast and heavy clouds the whole day.
If we're ever in Oz I might take you up on that!
My Israel Blog!
I really hope a fantabulous day for you is in the extremely near future.
Yikes! I'm sorry, that's truly dreadful.
In the event you ever try again, the best trick I know when the waves are bad is to stare at the horizon (it's hard but it's straightens you out). Sounds like your waves might have been too much for the trick, but I've done it w/ like 8ft swells and been ok (although only 2 of us out of 6 made it through sans puke).
