When did you start a sleep routine &how did you know when?

Yeah...so I think Ava has been starting to get into a pattern, but not totally sure.

When did you start a night time routine and when did you know what time to start it?

Like, last night, she had a bottle and then was out at this time (her 730 bottle, she cluster fed for 4 hours straight last night- tonight was 3 hours straight; e.g 10 oz from 530-730). She slept from 8pm-4 am last night and then again until 745.

So, tonight, she just had her 730 bottle, burped, and is passed out. MH is swaddling her now. Should I try the 730 bottle, if there is one tomorrow night at this time, in her room for a routine...assuming she stays out tonight?

Re: When did you start a sleep routine &how did you know when?

  • Thanks, Vikki. She's been sleeping through the night 90% of the nights lately...sometimes falling asleep at 10 and waking at 5 or 6 (I love those ones!)...but the 8-4 and 5-745 ain't bad either....

  • We've typically been doing bottles every 2 hours from 5-9ish, then after her 9/9:30 bottle we take her to her room, put her in the sleep sack, turn on the mobile and put her down for the night. She's awake for maybe 20 min and then out. We've been doing this for about 2 weeks with good success. Sometimes she wakes up at 3 or 4, sometimes she sleeps until 5 or 6. The other night she slept from 9-6 - THAT was glorious! She typically only naps for about 3 hours during the day though, if that.

So I think if she's falling asleep at 7:30, go ahead and put her down. No sense in trying to keep her up if she'll be cranky and fussy for another hour or two, right?

  • Thanks, Ali- I guess my question is more...we let her fall asleep down here in the living room instead of her bedroom, so when should I start doing that- putting her in her crib for the night...so I guess I will try it out tomorrow!

  • We started the routine when Nate was consistently falling asleep around the same time every night. I have no idea how old he was, but we figured out that was his natural bedtime and worked with it. We've adjusted the routine many times, when it seems to not be working so well (moving bedtime later, adding bath every night, longer time reading books, and most recently adding an extended cuddle time).

Oh yea, then I'd start putting her in the crib awake after that last bottle. Worst thing that happens is she doesn't fall asleep, but she'll get used to it! Some nights Emily just isn't ready for bed yet and needs another bottle, but she's usually content watching her mobile for awhile until she's wet or hungry again. But that at least gives me some time to do my own thing!

  • We started crib sleeping at 1 month. Best decision ever. We have a great night schedule now-bed routine starts around 6 which includes veggie, then bath and pjs followed by bottle. He then sleeps through the night from 7 to 6. Glad Ava is such a great sleeper!

  • I think we started a routine around two months - but JJ and I co-slept when he was a baby because of his breathing issues. But I'd normally pick him up from DC, give him a bottle and then put him down for the night when he was that age. As he got older, we adjusted it - and now, we live by the three B's: Bath, Book, Bed.

    Glad she's a great sleeper!

  • She sounds like a great sleeper! We started a routine right after she turned 2 months, not out of necessity as much as I wanted to start forming the association. Although, she had already set her bedtime by that point also... which has changed a few times since. We do bath, jammies, book (unless she's overtired), close the blinds, put on ocean noise, nurse, crib.
