What counts towards your data usage? I've tried googling and haven't gotten a solid answer. I have the iPhone 4.
From what I understand if you are connected to WiFi nothing counts towards the 2gb data limit. Somehow I've used like 8 times as much data as DH and I'm not doing much. I'm not at risk of going over but it just seems to be so much compared to DH's usage.
I check most stuff at home while connected to WiFi. I do check email, FB and a couple other things over lunch while connected to 3G but I wouldnt' think that it would eat up that much. Do text/picture messages count? Accessing Apps?
Maybe my settings are wrong? I have it set so it will connect to WiFi if available so it should always default to that, right?
Re: Those with Verizon
I don't have an iPhone but I do have an android. So I won't be able to tell you how to do these things, but some things that might help are:
Make sure you quit your apps after using them
Turn off the location settings
Change your settings to not check you email, facebook, etc as often (every 30 minutes instead of every 5 minutes)
Change your setting to use Wifi instead of the network if one is available.

Good tip on the email/FB notifications! I changed that. I also turned off notifications on most of my apps.
I do hit the "home" button when I'm done with an app which I think quits it. I wish there was a task manager or something where I could check what's running.

To close the app you need to double click the home button, it will bring up everything running in a bar along the bottom. If you hold down the app it will bring up the minus sign and you can close them that way.
Holy balls! Nearly everything on my phone is running then. Yikes
Thanks for the tip! I thought that was just the 4 most recently visited apps/sites. Oops1

I've had my iPhone for almost 3 years now (I think) and never knew this! Thanks for the tip!
Have you downloaded the Verizon app? It lets you track usage of your plan on your iPhone (and any other lines on your bill).
I can keep track of minutes and texts, and data that my phone uses by itself and as a hotspot. (My plan has unlimited data when I use the browser and apps ON the phone, but costs when I use it as a hot-spot and browse on my computer or iPad.)
I just downloaded that last night! All the tips from this post have drastically reduced my usage
Thanks!
