don't understand applicants

I just posted a help wanted ad for my small company.  It clearly states

  • the location
  • the P/T hours
  • the relatively low hourly rate ($10/hour)

I have now gotten several resumes from people who would have to drive more than 150 miles R/T each day, who want F/T work plus benefits & who expect the salary to be double & triple what I posted.  Gas alone will cost them almost what I'm paying & their travel time will almost be equal to the amount of time they spend at work.  Nobody will stay at a job like that & I'll be back looking in no time.

I politely e-mail back that their qualifications don't fit my needs.

Is there something else I should be doing to highlight the fact that this is a low paying part time job?

Re: don't understand applicants

  • I think people are just dumb. They are so desperate for jobs that some apply for anything. When my work was hiring we did the same where we listed out college grads only (for an accounting position) and we had people wanting hard labor jobs! We didn't respond to the ones that were clearly not qualified and I was shocked at how many resumes we got.
  • Is the salary in bold print? It might really weed out your applicants.

  • It's amazing to me that people don't pay attention.  When I was looking for a nanny awhile back, I put every clearly at the top of the listing that this was a VERY part-time position.

I can't tell you how many people expressed interest but then said they needed full time.

    It astounds me.

  • I think that is awesome you even respond.

I applied for a ton of positions on Craig's List and if my qualifications didn't fit, I never heard back from them.

  • Those people applying are the same ones out of work and wondering why they don't get interviews.

People just apply for anything when they're desperate. I was out of work last year in my experience, with so many people losing their jobs and a great pool of candidates, if you don't perfectly fit the job description, you probably won't get an interview.

  • I used to source resumes and applicants for a healthcare staffing company. People would apply for Nursing positions with no licenses, having worked in construction all their life saying they're up for a "challenge".

You can make that job posting as detailed as humanly possible, but you're still going to have ignorant, desperate applicants. It's unavoidable.

Never take this out on your applicants though. I once saw a company post a HUGE questionairre on the job posting which was totally demeaning to serious applicants. Who'd want to apply when you've already asked them to jump through loops and haven't even met you yet? You don't want to scare off the good ones!

Just keep it professional and friendly, and try your best to look at each resume. You may feel like you need to send responses to all applicants you decline - don't! This will eat up a ton of your time.

This.  I'm surprised you even bother (except in circumstances where relocation closer to the job might be possible for the applicant)!

WOW.  I don't know how I feel about that.  Either profoundly entertained, horrified or sad.  That is just....wow, I have no words.  Do they not know medical professionals must be professionals, or do they just not care?  Shocking.

  • We worked with both entry level and higher up positions, so we had a mix of people. That job really made me realize the kind of people who are out there. People will outright lie and scheme to try to get ahead. It's scary. You can't let it get you down though - there are tons of lovely people out there too!

You'd be amazed at the people that work in the healthcare industry though. Wow. Research your doctors and their staff carefully ;)

  • My boss was just telling me about an resume she received when she posted a job for a certified medical coder.  The applicant put as her qualifications: I make a great grilled cheese sandwich.  Then she proceeded to type out the exact steps to making a grilled cheese.

I told my boss to forward the resume to the deli in our lobby.  Sometimes I think people just send out a resume so they can say the did it to collect unemployment.

Or welfare.  They have to complete x # of hours of job search weekly and when they have exhausted everything they might qualify for they are forced to keep applying, regardless of their qualifications.  If you don't apply you don't get a check to help sustain your family.
