Who goes to Dr. Somer-Shely?
We're trying for #2, and I think its time to bite the bullet and say goodbye to my CB doctor. I love her, and she literally saved my life, but I just dont see myself making that trip over there again and again the next time around. So, it's time to bite the bullet... a friend of mine is recommending Dr. Somer-Shely and I know I've seen her name on here before. If you go to her.. thoughts? Anyone go to her w/ a history of pre-e or hellp syndrome?
Re: Who goes to Dr. Somer-Shely?
I think quite a few girls..off the top of my head I believe mandy (mandycory), jess (mamarazzi) and maybe Amanda? (Hawkeyebride). I know a few others personally that do as well and really like her.
I recommend the midwives, but not sure with your history if they'd end up refering you to someone else? Had a wonderful experience with them.
Me! I LOVE her. I am sad that I'm not having anymore babies, only because I only get to see her once a year now. Her phone nurse, Debbie, is definitely not very nice on the phone, but I did meet her IRL one time right after Macy came home from the hospital, and I was really sick. She was super nice to me in person and basically babysat my kids for me while I was seeing the doctor. Her other nurse, Becky, who does blood pressure, etc. is fabulous.
I don't have a history of pre-e or hellp, but both of my girls were born prematurely and spent some time in the NICU. She was great through that process. She helped calm me down when my water broke and took the time to explain to me what the risks to me/baby were. She has a great way of being honest with you, but also not sugar coating things. She also went above and beyond and regularly visited the NICU herself to check on my babies.
I've never been to her, but I do have a 2-pregnancy history w/pre-e. I ditched my first doctor because he was in Lincoln, plus he missed a lot of warning signs (looking back, I know I'd had pre-e for quite a while). For my second I went to Dr. Kruszka (he's in Bergan). He was *extremely* proactive and monitored me like crazy, and caught my pre-e at 26 weeks. He had me on meds, bedrest, seeing him twice a week and a MFM doctor monthly, weekly 24-hr urine collections and bloodwork, weekly NST's... I felt as safe as possible with his care.
I know he's a male doctor, but that's my experience FWIW. Good luck lady!
I don't go to her but she was on call when I had Evan and was super nice. She broke my water very gently
love is for every her, love is for every him, love is for everyone
I tried to get into Somer-Shely when we were first trying... she wasn't seeing new patients at the time unless you were already pregnant. Someone on here recommended Kruszka, and I LOOOOOOOVE him! I didn't have any major complications (just the borderline BP and dehydration at the end), but he was wonderful. He is his own practice - when you call after hours, he is the one who calls you back. There were a couple times I felt like an idiot calling, and he reassured me that it's okay and that's what he's here for. I didn't think I'd be comfortable with a male doctor, but I was willing to try because I had heard he was really proactive and really listens to his patients. I am SO glad I decided to give it a shot!

Yay - a playmate for Audrey
I see Dr. Mark Carlson in the same office as Somer-Shelly. She was my first choice, but didn't have any appointments for 8 weeks or something crazy. Carlson is seriously fantastic. He is the reason we have C (well, 33% of the reason!)
I see Dr. Shely and began going to her after recommendations found on the board. I had pre-e in my first pregnancy and my dd was born at 30 weeks. At that time, I lived in Iowa and was seeing a dr there who I think also missed a lot of the warning signs. My dd was born at Methodist after I was sent by ambulance from Red Oak to Omaha.
For my second pregnancy, I saw Dr. Shely throughout. She was very attentive to my situation and did testing above and beyond normal to ensure that everything was progressing as it should. She found out very early on that I have an issue with hypo-thyroidism and started me on medication, which may have been a problem in my first pg that was never checked out. She also had me working very closely with Dr. Robertson, a high-risk dr at the new women's hospital, who actually delivered my dd at Methodist. I saw them alternately throughout my checks, which were completed twice as often as normal because of my history. Together, they decided to take my ds via c-section at 36 weeks because my symptoms were progressing towards pre-e. During the surgery, they found out that my placenta was extremely close to rupturing, so I'm very lucky they decided to go when they did!
So...all in all...love Dr. Shely and couldn't give her, or Dr. Robertson, high enough recommendations.
I have delivered both dudes with Dr. Somer-Shely & I think very highly of her. She is kind, capable and direct. I thankfully did not have any complications during my pregnancies (well, gestational diabetes, but it wasn't hard to control) but I did have complications at delivery with both (emergent forceps deliveries). That was kind of frightening & I really felt comfortable in her care. She was calm & focused which helped me feel the same.
Couldn't say enough positive things about her, really. She is excellent.
I have also met Dr. Jacobi, just once, when she saw me in the hospital postpartum. She was also just lovely & I liked her a lot. Obviously that was just a quick encounter though.
I do not go to her however..I went to school for medical assisting and just recently graduated. I did my externship in the office she works in and she was actually the doctor that I followed. She is awesome and is everything you would want in a doctor! Very kind and gentle. Her nurse Becca ( the one that trained me) is amazing! You will be very pleased. On the downside, I know she is hard to get in to.
