aluminum oxidation residue?

I have a KitchenAid stand mixer, and one of the attachments has a black residue.  After googling, it seems that it may be the result of putting it in the dishwasher.

What can I use to get rid of this residue?  I want to use the attachment again (obviously) but don't want this residue getting in the food.

Re: aluminum oxidation residue?

  • If it's flakey/powdery then scrub it off with soap and baking soda. But aluminum also just gets discolored from being in the dishwasher and it's fine to use, it's just darker.

  • Use a scotch brite pad- GENTLY- to make sure there's no flaky stuff that could fall into your food. Otherwise, ditto PP, aluminum gets discolored but it's not a health hazard. (note- if you continue to wash it in the dishwasher regularly and it's reacting in this way, it will start to disintegrate and you will have to replace it. Aluminum is soooo soft, be gentle with it!)

  • This happened to mine too. Every time I washed it by hand then dried it, gray stuff came off the dishtowel. I just threw it out and bought a replacement paddle on the kitchen aid website. It grossed me out.
