A/C question

It looks like the weather is changing to the colder side. I think I'm going to suggest to DH that we turn off our A/C tonight. Has anyone turned their off yet?

Re: A/C question

  • I had mine off for the week after the hurricane when we had great weather. It was lovely but made my house super damp which wasn't pleasant.
  • Ours is still on. We'll probably take it on a daily basis for the next month or so. Today it's still 85 degrees so the a/c is definitely on. Also, I'm likely to keep it on because I'm paranoid about overheating DS. If it's a nice day/night we might turn it off for awhile.

  • We've shut it off a bit here and there. I would LOVE to keep my windows open more but usually my chain-smoking neighbors smoke just starts rolling in.

Definitely going off by the end of the week....temps are going to drop and it will feel like fall!

  • If it is going down to 60 degrees, I turn it off. Otherwise, with the 2 large dogs, DH 7 I and the baby it's too warm.

My neighbors chain smoke constantly in the front of their house and in the back. I just want to slap her silly.

It would be so much better if we could swap so we live next to each other and both of our crappy neighbors could live next to each other too!

  • Mine has been off at night for a while and has been off the majority of the day as well. I turn it on in the afternoon for a couple of hours, that's all

  • Isn't it more costly to turn it off here and there? Like I can't imagine turning it off everyday then on for a few hours does anything but cost more money in the long run.
  • We've turned ours off most nights these past few weeks and a few weekends.

I think it depends on your house. Ours has a very efficient system and we only turn it off when it's not on - like we have it set on a strict schedule, so when it's below 76 outside (when ours clicks on) we just set it to "off."

my father used to turn it on for a few hours every night as we were going to bed to cool things off and that was fine $$ wise, I think though if you are letting your house get up to 85 and then turning the AC on to 68, every other day, that is not cost effective, you know?

I've heard that it does cost more to turn off and on. Ours has been on since late May. DH didn't want to turn it off just yet. Maybe tomorrow...

  • We've kept it on b/c we can't really open windows too much b/c of my environmental allergies.  We had them open for painting here at the new house just before Labor Day, but the a/c has been on since we moved in.
  • Ours is currently still on but if this weekend is as cool as it's supposed to be, it will be going off.  Our bedroom and spare room always stay cool but since the living room is right off the kitchen, it's generally hot...so that's why it's still on.
