It's a long story - but we now can't get out of our lease for our apartment like we were told we could when we move into our house (at the beginning of October we're leaving) the only way we can get out of our rent is to find someone to sublet until February, and then they can take over the apartment if they want from there.
Has anyone ever used Craig's List to list something like this before - it freaks me out that some weirdo is going to take over our apartment, and would have all of my personal information sinc ethey'd technically be paying rent to us - and that freaks me out even more because our new house is within walking distance to the apartment.
I'd rather semi-know the person we would sublet too -but neither DH or nor I can think of or have talked ot anyone looking to move to our area, so I'm starting to get desperate, I don't want to waste approximately $3,000 on rent and minor utilities for a place I'm not even living in! We're putting the word out with family, friends, etc... but I was wondering how viable an option this is. I've never even been on Craig's List before, so maybe maybe it's not as bad as I think it owuld be listing it there?
Re: Craig's List?
Yeah - it is crap. But they basically told us - they would help us a last resort. they have a couple of empty apartments right now, and told us they will give anyone looking one of those, and fill all the emptys before subletting ours. Basically - they've already got our money, so they're going to fill their empty', rip us off, and MAYBE we'll get someone to sublet.
Hence why I'm trying to take it into my own hands to find someone to sublet the apartment, they're not really going to help us becasue they will get money off our apartment whether or not someone else moves in.
I've had great success with Craig's List but I'd be leary to CL this. My fear would be if they did damage - who would be responsible for that damage?
Have you posted on your FB wall? You may not personally know the sub-letters you get on FB but at least they'd be the friend of a friend or something like that.
Good luck!
Thanks - that's my whole concern with Craig's List - I know our landlord would run a background check and what not, but it still makes me nervous.
Facebook was my other thought - I can't access it at work, so my plan was to post there later tonight. Like you said- they'd be a friend of a friend, so I'd have an idea of who they were.
When I've done this in the past, the apartment has been willing to change over the paperwork to the new person's name. Basically you have to find someone to fill it, then they run the person's credit/etc just like if they were a new tenant. They should let you out of your lease when the new person signs. You just get the new person to pay you the deposit (or part of the deposit) then they'll get "your" deposit back from the apartment. At least that's how I've always seen it done in Texas! GL!
